Rio Bravo and its two Remakes
Howard Hawks (1896-1977) was a famous American film director. His films cover a wide range of genres, among those a Western trilogy.
Rio Bravo, released 1959 with John Wayne, Dean Martin and Walter Brennan, is considered one of Howard Hawks' best films.
That might have been the reason why he made a first remake of it in 1967, El Dorado, with John Wayne and Robert Mitchum.
He should have stopped there, but he tried for the third time and made Rio Lobo in 1970. It was his last film and it is widely agreed that it is his worst. Obviously even John Wayne as the only wide-known actor in the cast could not prevent the film from getting mostly negative reviews.

The Intention behind the Film and the Plot
The story:
John T. Chance arrests a killer and drags him to the local jail. Nathan Burdette, the killer's brother and a powerful rancher tries to get him out of jail with his men. In the end he fails.

The Deguello - Written bei Composer Dimitri Tiomkin
In Rio Bravo the music can be heard when "The Good Guys" are waiting for the attack of the "Bad Guys". It symbolizes the almost hopeless situation in which Sheriff John T.Chance and his friends are.
El Dorado
The First Remake
His friend, the sheriff-gone-drunkard J.P. Harrah (Robert Mitchum) gets shot at as well and hops around on crutches.
The third man on his side, a young man called Mississippi, fights with his knife because he cannot shoot.
Whereas the men are shown with deficits, the women are strong, especially a young woman who rides and shoots like a man.

The Last of the Three: Rio Lobo
Whereas in Rio Bravo and El Dorado well known actors like Dean Martin and Robert Mitchum had accompanied John Wayne, Rio Lobo was without additional famous actors. The film received mostly negative reviews.

- Wow! Great lens! It has been years (oops, maybe a decade) since I have seen Rio Bravo. Everybody loves the Duke even if they aren't normally western fans.
