A Brief History of Grandfather Clocks
For hundreds of years, grandfather clocks have been distinctive, yet practical heirloom furniture for many households. The traditional and homely aura they provide is unparalleled in the furniture realm.In 1582, Galileo Galilei discovered the pendulum's "ability" to keep accurate time. This discovery led to the most-commonly used method for keeping time in all clocks, including grandfather clocks.
Not long after Galilei released his ideas on the pendulum, a physicist by the name of Christian Huygens developed a pendulum-based floor clock which was said to keep a more steady time, and thus he was credited with the invention of the first grandfather clock.
Then, to continue the improvement of timepieces, William Clement came to the conclusion that the longer the pendulum the more accurate the time.So, In 1670, he developed the first "long-case clock". In a wooden case, it stood about 6' tall.
These long-case clocks, later dubbed grandfather clocks, were constantly being improved upon, eventually allowing people other than royalty to purchase them due to lower costs.
They were called grandfather clocks because of a song called "The Grandfather's Clock" by the American Henry Work in the late 1800's.
Grandfather clocks remain a symbol of antiquity, royalty, and traditional family heirlooms to this day.

Grandfather clocks do require some maintenance, but it is well worth it in the end! Keeping your clock at tip-top condition is as simple as keeping the parts lubricated.By having the clock tuned up and lubricated every 5 years you will retain or even increase the value of the heirloom and be able to pass it down through the generations!

We rec'd a Howard Miller La Rochelle Grandfather Clock this year as a gift. There was an initial problem with the clock, and the dealer (La-Z-Boy) sent someone to fix the problem. Thereafter, the clock was slow. I tried to tighten the screw at the bottom of the pendulum, as indicated by HM's customer service, in order to solve the problem. Although I have tightened the screw as much as possible, the clock still loses about 15 minutes every 2weeks. I contacted HM to tell them of my problem and they told me that the clock was a 2003 model and their 2 year warranty would not apply since the clock was an older model. Although I explained that the warranty stated that it covered problem for 2 years after the date of purchase (not the date of manufacture) the sales representative told me that I would have to go to the dealer or pay out of my pocket to fix the clock. Word to the wise; ask for the age of any Howard Miller clock you purchase from a dealer.
