Low Budget Scriptwriting

So you are getting started as a script writer, but the budget is limited? Let me give you a few tips that will help you out. All you have to do is be smart and creative when writing your script. Know how to adapt to your budget!

First, you have to be smart about your locations.

- Have a small number of locations: more places= more costs.

- If you need multiple locations, at least choose them close to each other to minimize transportation

- Don't write a script about something going on in the rainforest if you live in the city. Be smart and use what is available to you nearby.

Think about how you can save money with the characters and actors.

- A low number of characters is cheaper. Four or five parts should be enough.

- Keep your script simple. You won't be able to pay experienced actors if you're on a budget.

- Build a network, including actors. Find actors who will be cheap. Find the ones who are more interested in getting started than in getting paid a lot.

A few additional script writing tips:

- Avoid driving scenes! They are expensive.

- Don't use specialized props. Look for free things instead. Be creative.

- Create a file keeping track of all the expenses. It will then be much easier to control your budget. Adapt your script if it turns out you are going over the budget.
