How Heroin Works

Heroin is a synthetic opiate drug. It only takes a few times to become a heroin addict. Withdrawal effects onset quickly therefore causing the addict to cosume heroin multiple times a day to ward off the withdrawals. It is made from morphine derived from the extract of Asian opium poppy plant. .

Effects on the Brain

After using heroin it enters the brain and is converted into morphine. The morphine binds to the opiod receptors mainly in the pain perception area of the brain. The opioid receptors are also located in the brain stem, which regulates breathing, blood pressure, and arousal. After an injection of heroin, users feel a surge of euphoria, which is known as a "rush." Following the initial "rush", the user goes "on the nod," an alternately wakeful and drowsy state. Mental functioning becomes clouded. If heroin is not injected, the user may not feel the intense "rush."
