how to create a squidoo lens

Ranked #4,191 in Squidoo Community, #307,531 overall | Donates to Sisters of the Holy Family

A step by step guide

Welcome, if you are new to Squidoo and you've never created a lens before then please look around.

In this lens, Squidoo Newbies can see step-by-step how to create a lens and the questions that Squidoo asks along the way.

A personal thank you to Susanna Duffy and those at SquidU who suggested ways to improve the lens.

So with this in mind, get ready, get set, GO!

Let's get started, shall we?

Creating a new Squidoo lens

Creating a new lens from your Squidoo Dashboard

New members can start from the Lensmasters Dashboard. There are two buttons you can click to make your new Squidoo lens with. Click either one to start the Squidoo Wizard that will help you make your lens.

Members that are logged on can also see these buttons when they read published lenses.

What's your page going to be about?

Step One in the Squidoo wizard

type=textSquidoo now asks you what your page is going to be about. This is useful because your answer will help name your lens, give your lens a web address and explain what your content will be about.

So just enter what your lens is about and click "Continue".

Title your page!

Step Two in the Squidoo wizard

type=text

Now, this step fine tunes what you have entered about your lens. You can

  • Lens title: if you think of a better title than the one you started with, you can change it here.
  • Set your Lens URL: This is a unique web address for your Squidoo lens. A default is given, but if it is already taken, then you can change it by using other words or changing the hyphens in the name.
  • Pick a topic and subtopic for the lens: Squidoo helps with a pop up list of topics that you can choose from
  • Open Graph tag: Use the Graph tag tool to help facebook direct traffic to the lens and
  • Rate your lens: What is the advantage of only making G-rated lenses? G-rated lenses can be found and read by anyone, whereas R rated lenses are limited only to Squidoo members that have Safe Surfing disabled.
FInally, click the 'Back' button to change what your lens is about or the 'Continue' button to go to Step Three.

Tag your page so people can find it!

Step Three in the Squidoo wizard

Step three to create your Squidoo lens

The first tag is automatically generated from page one, but you can add three other tags. The tags on Squidoo are used for internal purposes and you can find out more from these sites: Workshop Add-On for Firefox and Chrome and at squidutils.com.

On this page, you need to:

  • Use the first tag automatically generated from step one or change it to another tag
  • then enter up to three more tags that will help people find your lens and
  • Then enter the security word and click 'Build My Lens'
Alternatively, click the 'Back' button to change the title details of your lens.

Checkpoint 1

Do you know how to create a Squidoo lens?

So far, we have looked at locating the buttons to Build/Create your new lens, answering the questions asked in the three step Wizard and pressing the Build My Lens button to create a lens ready for editing and publishing

What's beyond "Build my lens"

Now you can add content

Your Squidoo lens after you press Build your lens

Once your lens is built, you can see, edit, add or remove from the default modules provided. Namely, the Introduction, the 'New Text Module' and the 'new Amazon' modules.

Click the Edit button at the top right hand corner of any module to change it.

The bottom of your build lens

"Build My Lens" also shows 'New Guestbook Comments' module.

How do I edit modules?

Let's edit the Introduction first.

type=textYou can edit any module by clicking the Edit button at the top right hand corner of the module. If you click the Edit button on the Introduction module you can see where you can change the title of the lens introduction, write a description and upload an image. In this module (and the text modles) you can upload an image by clicking the browse button and navigating to the location of our image. When you have found the image, select the file and click the Open button. Scroll down on the original screen and click the 'Upload Photo' button to uplod the image to Squidoo, label the photo. Then scroll up to click the Table of Content and Related Lenses tabs.

Editing the Table of Content (ToC)

Consider using the defaults

Editing the table of contants in a Squidoo lensHelp your readers find what they want quickly. Add a Table of Contents (ToC). An ToC in the Introduction module makes this super easy by using the module names in your lens to create a default index. As a result, you do not need to do much here, so accept the defaults if you want.

If you prefer to not have a table of contents, the you can simply turn the table of contents off.

When you choose to have a ToC, you can customise your table by:
  • Choosing a layout (hint, click the preview button to see what each layout looks like before you select your preferred layout) and
  • then tick each module that you want displayed.
There are some benefits in removing monetising modules from your ToC, because readers want to find the content that they are looking for quickly and not see a page that is just an advertisement, which could be being mistaken for spam or a phishing site.

How do I show Related Lenses

The last tab for the Introduction module

type=textSquidoo encourages sharing knowledge, so if you know a lens that is similar too or adds to the content of your lens, then send your readers to these lenses by entering up to six Squidoo extension URLs in to the fields of the favourite related lenses section. If you haven't already found lenses that you want to add, leave them blank and Squidoo will help by choosing six for you.

Checkpoint 2

Do you now know how to edit the Introduction module?

So far, we have looked at how to change any module in Squidoo by clicking the Edit button. The introduction module has three tabs for the different parts of the introduction that you can change. The first, for modifying the text of the introduction, the second to include the ToC and the last tab to link related lenses.

Publish your lens

If you want, you have enough information to publish your Squidoo lens.

Publishing your Squidoo lens with just the Introduction.

Squidoo is pretty medium for ceating and publishing your lens. If you want to try publishing what you have written so far you can do so now.

Click the orange 'Publish' button at the top of your lens. You will be warned (shown below) that your lens needs more content, but you can see what your lens looks like now and come back to edit it later on.

As you become more experienced, you will spend more time improving your lens at this stage, so you can publish a lens with enough information for search engines and ultimately your readers will need.

Your Squidoo lens needs more content

Warning. Add more content or publish anyway.

Your lens is now published

The confirmation page

Cofirmation that your lens has been published

After you click the 'Just Publish Anyway' button from the earlier screen, you will see a page confirming your lens has been published.

Click the 'Go see it' link to admire your work.

Optionally, click the 'facebook' button to share your cool lens with your friends on Facebook. It is recommended that you wait till you refine your lens a few times before sharing. Depending on how engaged your friends are with your lens, your friends are likely to provide good comments. If the lens only has an introduction, readers may not get the concept of your lens and either ignore the page or leave negative comments.

Anyway, once again it is up to you.

Your first lens published.

Now you can see your lens online.

Checkpoint 3

Do you know how to edit and publish your lens?

So far we have looked at publishing your lens using the Publish button and the dialogue boxes that appear. As a result you can now create, edit and publish your Squidoo lens. Hooray!
