When My Doctor Told Me My Cholesterol Was Too High I Found Out How To Lose Weight Fast!

Shortly after I'd had a health check my doctor rang to say he wanted to see me, it gave me a serious fright.


When I entered the Surgery he looked grave as he said: "Your health is at risk because the cholesterol level in your body is too high. This could have an adverse  affect on your heart."

As I struggled to recover from the shock, I asked: "Is this weight related?"

"That is very likely to be the case," he replied.

We discussed what I could do about it - I eventually left feeling a bit confused and more than a bit concerned.

I set a weight loss goal

Fortunately I'm a professional life coach so it didn't take me long to work out that in order to get my cholesterol down I needed to set myself a weight loss goal.

From past experience I knew that I'd soon lose interest in anything that took too long to produce results. Motivation to go on losing weight would depend on success. So the question was "how to lose weight fast?"

Never having dieted before I guess I did what most people do. I bought a book, talked to some friends who I knew to be serial dieters and read a few articles on the Internet.

In the end I concluded that the only thing that made any kind of sense was to consume fewer calories and burn more calories. So that's what I decided to do.

First I lost 4 pounds then...

In the first week I lost 4 pounds, great! But this initial victory created a real problem. I enjoyed telling everyone about my success, but I quickly became aware that denying myself the quantities of food to which I was accustomed was creating a craving for food which I had never experienced before.

This was my body crying "feed me."

The craving was so strong that it overcame my willpower. My initial success was quickly wiped out and my weight returned to the level at which I'd started. And the frightening thing was that the hunger didn't go away.

I knew that if I didn't find a way to strengthen my willpower and control that hunger I'd quickly swell up like a balloon. In other words I had to make changes in my behavior. I had to develop the habit of strong willpower.

NLP came to my rescue

Many years ago, as part of my training to become a really effective personal development coach, I had done several courses in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming, or mind language programming). I am now a Licensed Master Practitioner of NLP, the highest level of qualification attainable.

NLP is an excellent way of changing people's behavior. So I sat down and wrote an NLP based Personal Behavior Change Program which I called The Magic Hats. The goals were to strengthen my willpower and to change my attitude towards food.

The Magic Hats have proved to be a really effective NLP based technique for making changes including strengthening your willpower.

I lost 20 pounds

I developed more modules to my total Weight Loss program as I went along. Eventually I lost 20 pounds, my blood/cholesterol level reduced and I am now in the so-called "safe zone."

Then I decided to take a break from weight loss to give my body time to adjust to it's new weight and just naturally settle down to eating and drinking normally again.

This 'rest period' has been going on for the last 4 months. In that time I have put 4 pounds back on again. But for the past two months my weight has been stable, give or take a pound or two up or down.

The Problem With Controlling Hunger 

With any kind of diet you are going to feel hungry.

Your body has been designed so that if it doesn't get sufficient food or the amounts of food it has been accustomed to, it will demand more.

Hunger is a naturally occurring phenomenon which is built into all human beings.

Eat less and hunger will assert itself. It is programmed to switch on the moment your body feels a lack of food intake.

The question therefore is: "how do you control it and stop it from driving you crazy?"

We are dealing here with a motivator that is so powerful that it can drive normally sane people to get up in the middle of the night and go raid the fridge.

If you decide on a head-to-head battle you will probably lose. It is programmed to be a winner. It is that way for your self-preservation. A head-to-head battle will require amazing levels of will power on your part.

If you need to lose weight it becomes really important that you find a way to do battle with your hunger that will not cause you so much grief that you give up the unequal struggle.

You know - the things you said here seem to make a lot of sense to me. Ive tried all sorts of diets in the past with very little success. As it's coming up to christmas I could do to shift a few pounds in preparation - I'm looking forward to trying out you Magic Hats approach.

My Inspiration 

These are my dogs . The larger, shaggy coated one is Mr Tod, he's a six year old Patterdale Terrier, named after the fox in the Beatrix Potter stories. The short coated one is Annie who we rescued from the Dog's Home. She's probably a Jack Russell/Patterdale cross.

They inspire me because they are so full of life, energy and happiness. They also keep me exercised for at least 90 minutes every day.

Now here's a funny thing - even though she's an Olympic standard eater, she never puts on weight. That says something about the value of exercise.
