Top Water Fishing With Buzz Baits
Like I mentioned in the intro, there is nothing like a largemouth exploding out of the water to take a top water lure. Top water fishing can sometimes be the best method even when the fish aren't biting.Chances are there will always be a few fish that are shallow. As long as there is cover and bait fish cruising nearby, they will stay shallow. One of my favorite topwater lures is the buzzbait.
When it comes to choosing a buzzbait, it must have a very good hook, but an equally important factor is head design. My advice is to make sure you get a buzzbait with a flat head, so when you make a cast and start your retrieve, the bait planes more quickly. If you use a round head, the bait takes longer to reach the surface, and you won't be fishing as efficiently.
There are times when you really need to slow down a presentation, like when its colder. This can be difficult with a buzzbait, because you need to maintain a speed that keeps the buzzbait on plane. To slow a buzzbait down, just bend the blades a little more than they already are, closing the angle. The more you close it, the slower it fishes.
Another way to improve your buzzbait success is to paint your blades. There is nothing wrong with the silver or gold but especially if you are fishing in muddy or tainted water, you might go with something brighter. A general rule of thumb for bait color is the muddier the water, the brighter the color. So if you are in really muddy water than chartreuse or white will be your best bet.
One other thing you might consider is changing your blade. A Colorado blade, which is rounder and wider, tends to put off more of a vibration in the water. Remember that top water lures should be rather noisy to draw attention. There are some buzzbaits that come with both a Colorado and a willow blade. Lets not forget about the clackers. They can be very effective as well.
When fishing top water lures remember to vary your speed and presentation. I like to add feathers to all my top water lures if they don't already have them. This gives them a life like look even if they are sitting still.
My grandfather's favorite technique when fishing top water was to cast the bait and wait for the ripples to clear before he would begin retrieving. It doesn't mean that you have to do this but it is just an example of how you can vary your presentation.
