The odds of a proposal that is completely freelancer-generated being accepted are low: even if the first editor you send it to thinks it's brilliant, something else at the company may have higher priority.

I appreciate the breakdown on the various writing sites. Helium now has a 1 year rights exclusivity on all articles except creative writing articles. I think this is a result of Google's spam policy. Writers must agree not to publish the article elsewhere for 1 year.

I've written for a lot of writing networks online. I'd say one thing that can make it work for you (the individual) is the community of the writers on the network. A strong writing community is a big deal, even if you are a social hermit and don't hardly talk to anyone. The community of writers is actively working to make the site better. Which is good for every writer there. Of course, this only happnes if the owners/ moderators of the site work with and listen to the writers. Sites where the owners don't get involved and listen will never have a strong writing community - on the site itself. That is something I have learned to watch for. I've also got an account at HubPages. Look me up there. It's the same user name as here.

I found this to be a wonderful resource for freelance writers - Angel Blessed for original content and great programs that can really help. It is curious that you didn't discuss print much - there is always that option. I wonder if Hubpages is still stronger than Squidoo after the panda update - I would like to see some data on that. (Especially since I spend all my time on Squidoo!) The Keyword Academy looked like an excellent, grounded program - one that I may begin at some time. All in all, very good - and I am so proud of you for following through and making your dreams come true!

I sincerely enjoyed reading this lens! I have always aspired to be a writer without ever getting started. Well, now, with or without an excuse, I believe I will begin to write. My writing will take place mostly in my spare time, which indeed isn't very much. I also enjoy proofreading and editing. In fact, I just earned my first editing commission at fiverr.com, in which I just opened an account four days ago! This is really a very helpful lens. Thanks a lot!

I used to freelance - and then, like you, I got sick and stopped, but I became highly interested in passive income and am just now getting to the point where I'm getting "back in the saddle" - but this time, trade/magazine work will take a far backseat to my pursuit of passive income.

I also did just like you did. I researched, read, spent a lot of time "figuring things out" instead of just jumping in. You mentioned her in this lens, but it was some advice from Linda Formichelli (www.RenegadeWriter.com) that got me going and I got several assignments from just this one tip....basically, I just contacted trade journals telling them I was available, and voila! Assignments - I wish I could remember exactly how Linda had me word it, but apparently, a lot of people flake on assignments - and there's nothing quite as stressful to an editor than blank space in a magazine (or newspaper) that's about to go to print.

Linda's great to work with - and offers classes. I plan to get a private session with her in the next few months to strategize jumping back into the pursuit of regular magazine work.

I'd also suggest introducing yourself to your local newspaper. You can get some great clips that way which will allow you to pursue the more tradition freelancing.

  • prairierprincess Sep 23, 2011 @ 11:56 pm | delete
Hey, Master Dayton, I googled this article and did not realize until about 70% in that it was by you! This is prairieprincess for Hubpages, btw.

There is some really good information here. I did sign up for Associated Content but after I had, realized that it does not allow Canadian contributors, which is disappointing.

I want to make a living as a writer and the hardest part is trying to break in. I've signed up for Guru and E-Lance and I guess I just have to keep trying.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I have wanted to be a writer since I began college in 1998 too, but have never had enough knowledge on how to get started (and actually make money at it). I am finally getting serious (also after deciding a career in education was not for me), and my first few web searches were very intimidating. I am so glad that I found your page; I now feel like I have the means to go forward and make a "go" of this. At least until I finish and publish my novel. ;-) Thanks again!

Hello! Thanks for very informaive lens, I can certainly find myself in some decribed cases. I can also add there is no real passive income because the economic rules are constantly changing and you should adapt to those changes, which means non-stop education. It does not matter if you are loaded with blue chip stocks, real estates or money making pages, you should still learn, learn and learn. And love to learning is a must for copyrighters too. Best regards from the sunny side of the Alps!

Terrific!!! I was thinking of creating a portfolio (links to all the different sites I write for) on Squidoo (as a lens). Do you think its a good idea given that my Squidoo profile itself isn't too hot?
  • Monteath Jan 17, 2011 @ 12:41 pm | delete
    Hi Wordstock,
Yeah, I've been around the block a few times, lol. Actually I'm looking at this and realize I need to do some major revisions. A lot of what is here is still true and helpful, but one of my top sites for long term freelancing isn't even mentioned here, or not nearly enough! I need to get a HubPages section further up and drop that eHow down. My experiences with Helium were just not good at all, and I think HubPages is such a better outlet, and while building up the passive income even places like InfoBarrel hooking up to your websites are even better. If you can be approved for Constant-Content for individual articles, then you're in great shape! Keep at it - the fight is worth it.
  • wordstock Jan 15, 2011 @ 7:57 pm | delete
This is sort of interesting because I met you on eHow but didn't see you at Helium and now I find you on Squidoo. I write for Helium and like it. No, I'm not getting rich but have discovered I can make as much as I am willing to put in. Squidoo is more fun however. Helium is probably the better site for straight articles on a certain topic while Squidoo has a lot more freedom. eHow was a disappointment and I did not take the offer to move to the parent company.

This is a very good lens about writing! I was very sad when eHow did away with how things are done, I really liked them as they were. I wonder if quality control issues are what ultimate closed the original business model down, though.

Great article. I know that I have wrote for many of those places. For some reason CC always rejects my articles saying they already have to many in the database. However, that is fine by me since I have so many articles up on other sites. I have found that Londonbrokers.net is a great site to write for as well and pays into paypal each and every week, Great article though!

No question, this is excellent advice. I've saved it to Favorites for my writing business. But you should proofread it.
  • Monteath Aug 29, 2010 @ 12:43 am | delete
Depends on the article. For basic Internet content I just look around online, get good information from a few sources, and write it up using my own words. That's how most people do it. For detailed technical or historical reports, I'll do some searching on journal article data bases or check out some books from the library.
  • E. M. Thomas Aug 28, 2010 @ 5:42 am | delete
Hey this is a really great introductory website! It helped me out a lot. I do have one more question though. How do you do research for your articles?

  • Monteath Jun 22, 2010 @ 11:49 pm | delete
WriterV, I can see your point, but I've also written for Demand Studios for nearly a year separate of eHow, and I can attest to what many writers say about the longer being there, the more they get the feeling of being squeezed out. The issues I've had with copy editors in the past month rejecting articles without reason, rejecting articles for reasons not given in the guidelines, or outright insulting me and my ability (after nearly 700 approved articles through DS) in the comments before rejecting an article has me heavily soured on DS, as much as it can be a good place for making money on the side. It's not that DS doesn't have its place, or can't be great when the editors aren't going psycho, but the passive income I've seen from there amounts to nothing and there is still a right way to do things and a wrong way, and they chose the wrong way because it was the easy way out, IMO. That's my overview on the situation, but it is only opinion from a 6 year pro and the two pennies that's worth. Thanks for commenting, though, I'm always glad to hear people's opinions on what's going on in the writing world.
  • WriterV Jun 22, 2010 @ 11:42 pm | delete
Good article overall, but one point you made about the eHow throwing out the people who built it. Maybe they did unfairly drop some of the earlier writers, but some of them (myself included) were added immediately to their Demand Studios program where I get paid immensely more as long as I put in the work. I'm not sure if I just got lucky though...

  • WritingforYourWealth Jan 16, 2010 @ 9:19 pm | delete
Nice job creating a very thorough resource! I'm sure it's possible to make six figures freelancing, but I think it's best to build up your own niche site, put at least half of your writing efforts into that, and then monetize it through advertising, affiliate programs, and (best of all) your own products (such as ebooks). The good thing about freelancing is you can get started making money right away. It takes longer to build up a site and start seeing the cashola.

Hi, this is a great page! I have a question...what do you think of pen names for freelance writers? What are the pros and cons?
  • Net Jun 2, 2009 @ 2:34 am | delete
Here's what I want to know how to do: Get an article printed.

That's all. It doesn't need to be sustainable as a livelihood. It doesn't need to be a career. I think I can write a newspaper-worthy article. I don't think I could write at a rate & quality consistent enough to make a living, but life is long.

This is a first class lense. How about a tutorial lens-let: How to get an article printed. A baby brother to this one.

Your lens is truly comprehensive and the strategy for beginners to start with Constant Content/Associated Content is priceless. Hi Shane - I gotta thank you for writing this very insightful lense about freelance writing. I transitioned from a career in Human Resources to being a full-time freelance Business Writer over the summer and I haven't looked back. However, recently I found myself wondering how to get experience with other forms of writing and if getting some addtional training would be beneficial. Your articles and the resources provided here helped me find many of the answers I was looking for. So keep up the great work in your own career and again thanks for your great advice!

Nice lens! This lens gave me a bunch of ideas. Although I've been published in traditional newspapers and magazines, the online version is still new to me (Squidoo is a great place to practice, right?). And... new writers wanting help with their English can always use some editing, so I'll try to write articles for eLance on editing, for starters. Thanks again for this informative lens!
