Using a guitar kit is a great way to build your first guitar.

- Be prepared to spend about three to six hundred dollars depending on what kind of guitar that you want to build and the type of materials you would like to use.

- It is best if you have some woodworking experience. I have seen guitars built by people with no experience but they tend to be a bit on the clumsy side. However, if you just want to experience the pure pleasure of building you own guitar then go for it.

- Purchase a few good books and DVDs on building guitars. There is also a great deal of information online and organizations such as Luthiersforum, 13th Fret, ASIA's Forum, MIMF, and RMMGA can be very valuable. It is best to prepare yourself by doing some initial study.

- See if you can visit an actual luthier. Nothing beats seeing the real thing in action.

- You should get to know the parts of the guitar.
