How to Build a Wind Turbine

Each wind turbine that you find will have five essential parts. If you concentrate on building these five parts individually, you won't get overwhelmed and you will have your wind turbine done in no time!

1. A generator
2. Blades
3. A mounting that keeps it turned into the wind
4. A tower to get it up into the wind
5. Batteries and an electronic control system

Most people use either a computer tape drive motor or a permanent magnet DC motor. You can usually find these on ebay or by searching online. You want a motor that will put out over 12 Volts at a fairly low rpm, and a useful level of current. This will give you the output you need for a smallish sized wind turbine.

You can make your own wind turbine blades out of PVC pipe that you can find at your local hardware store. As far as size, your pipe should be about 1/5 as thick as it is long. You will quarter the pipe, and then quarter it again.

Cut out a rectangle from the base of each blade (to use as a place to attach it). Then, cut from the high tip of the base to the point. They should look something like the photo pictured here.
