How to build your own lens on squidoo

I
ncluding some basic html tips!

I've noticed a need for guidance for some people that really have the desire to build a lens of their own, but really don't know where to start.

Some have started but are not sure where they want to go with it.

Or they may have an idea of where they want to go with their lens, but aren't really sure how to get there.

One of the things that I love doing is helping people to learn.

I will try to put everything I can think of here, that will help you build your lens, and please, please, please do not hesitate to ask questions on the guestbook. That way I can answer them here, so that others that may have the same question can learn from it too.

When your ready to Make a lens of your own here and get your own paycheck each month, that's the link to begin!

Or if you have ideas of your own that you have found helpful, please share them here too! We all benefit from each other here, at our squidoo home. We are not only each others links to higher traffic, supporters, and competition, but we are each others customers too!

  49. Great things on Squidoo

The First Step...

Deciding what you would like to make your lens about...

Think about what you want to do with your lens?

Do you want to share you knowledge or expertise on a specific subject with the world?

(Maybe you have a something that you are an expert on, or that you have had to learn and want to help others learn about it as well)

Maybe you want to have a place to share your craft or artwork?

(Do you have a special talent, are you an artisan and you want a place to share your talent with the world and fellow artists?)

Maybe you want to sell specific items?

(Maybe you have something that you wish to sell, because you love collecting them, or making them?)

Maybe you would like to make money for yourself or a charity? Who doesn't!

(If you are wanting a money making lens, try to think of what will sell? Like maybe designer purses, or whatever you thing will sell. What is the latest and greatest craze out there? What do you like to buy, that others may want to?)

Maybe you really only want to connect with people that have a like interest in your hobby or favorite thing?

(What are your hobbies, maybe they are something that you would like to share with others that have similiar interests...like kite flying, or geocaching...what a great way to connect on your hobby lens)

Whatever you decide to make your lens on, I think it should be something that you have a passion for. Because your lens will reflect your passion or love for what you do or what you know! People should be able to feel your passion when they look at your lens. It should be filled with interesting things that will grab their interest!

(Hint: In the text module if you want something in bold, just put the letter b in brackets <> at the beginning of the sentence. And at the end when you want the bold to stop, put it like this /b in brackets <>

(If you want it in color and bold, like I've done above, use the following code:

(b style="color: green; font-weight: bold;")green(/b)

Where it says green just replace it with your text that you want colored. Change the color by just typing in a different color word, blue, purple, orange, yellow, etc
)

You may have noticed the links I have added throughout this section, they are underlined in blue. I did these links to my other lenses using another basic html trick...just simply type

<a href="http://www.domain.com">www.yourdomain.com</a>

The Second Step...

Think of a good Title for Your lens...

Your Lens Title

Just like a sign on a shop or store window, should reach out and grab people and entice them inside to look at your lens.

The Title and Introduction will be what people will see when they are browsing through different subjects. They will see the Title, and the first few lines of your introduction. This is very important to remember when you are making your lens.

(Hint: In the text module if you want something in italics, like I've done above, just put the letter i in brackets <> at the beginning of the sentence. And at the end when you want the italics to stop, put it like this /i in brackets <>)

The Third Step...

Create Your Own Lens

Now that you have your idea, and your title for your lens it is time to create it.

You can do so from the below link if you would like.

Just click on it and it will guide you through a series of questions...very basic questions really:

What title you want, what you want your lens to do, if you are a first time user of squidoo they may ask you to create your profile with some additional questions.

They may ask if you want your email address public or private. I tend to not want mine public because there are people who might misuse it with software that searches for email addresses so they can fill your box with junkmail. If you use a guest book, when someone posts to it you will receive an email showing you have a new comment. That is what I would suggest, is to utilize your guestbook for contact with others. Just to be on the safe side.

(Hint: In the text module if you want something to be underlined, like I've done above, just put the letter u in brackets <> at the beginning of the sentence. And at the end when you want the underline to stop, put it like this /u in brackets <>)

Follow this Link to Join Squidoo...

Become your own Lensmaster
Click on this link to join squidoo and make your very own lens.

By joining from this page you are also helping to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society that does important research for blood cancers. It costs you nothing, but if your lens makes $15.00 it will donate $5.00 (not of your money) to that charity.

The Fourth Step...

Deciding what content you want on your page.

When your lens first opens after you create it, you will notice a bunch of different "modules" that squidoo automatically puts on there so that you know different things are available.

The first module after your title should be the "Introduction, Contents and Discovery Page".

This is an important one, because this is the one that the first few sentences will show to give the world a brief description of what your page is about. So you want to put a short, brief and yet powerful message into those first few lines. Because after all we do want people to look at our lens. Honestly it is why we create them isn't it?

The other modules that they give you will vary. That is one thing that I have learned about Squidoo is that they themselves are always evolving and creating new tools for us to use to make our lens' better!

(Note: on the write module's like this one, you can add a link to your website if you have one, like this Art By Linda ...use the following code...

(a href="your domain link here")Name of your link here(/a)

again replace the () with <>
)

So look through each of those modules and keep the ones you want to add to, and delete the ones you don't. To delete them just click on the orange "X" next to the "edit" button. It will go away (and don't worry if you change your mind, you can get that same module back) so simplify your content at first and then build from there.

My suggestion would be to have a title page, this allows people to see the entire content of your lens at a glance. Because maybe what you have at the top of the page doesn't interest them, but with a glance at your title page they can spy something down at the bottom that they want to peek at.

Another suggestion is to always have a guestbook. This give people that come to look at your lens a chance to contact you with comments, or suggestions, or just a way to connect to others that is safer than supplying your email address on a public forum.

From there on, what modules you would like are totally up to you and what you want to do with your very own lens.

I'm going to show some examples of different types of modules and what they look like...which I think will help you decide what modules will work best for you and your page!

Before we get too far...

This is a TEXT List module by the way, if you want to list...well a List!

But back to what I was getting to, before we get to far I told you how to delete modules you don't want. I should also tell you how to add modules you do want.
  1. After you create your lens, go to the top where you will see some buttons...
  2. Click on the "Add Modules" button
  3. After seeing the examples on my page, decide which modules you might like to see, or try some new ones of your own.
  4. Select each module you would like to display. (hint: you can add more than one of the same type of module)
  5. Then click on "Reorder Modules", drag them to the place you want them to display on your page.
  6. While you are building your page, instead of hitting "Publish" you can just hit "Save Draft".
  7. When you are ready for the World to see it, hit "Publish"....drumroll please....TA DAH!!!
  8. You have now created your own lense!
  9. Check your dashboard often to see how many people are looking at your lens.
  10. Promote it by joining groups, emailing it, visiting other lens and commenting on their lens, lensrolling them to yours, they may do the same to yours. Post the link on blogs you write it. There are many ways to get the word out on your special lens.
  11. But most of all, enjoy it! Keep it updated. Make it your baby, let it reflect you!

Will start off here...This is the Text/Write module

This is a good tool for writing information that you want them to read about...

A secret you should know about using the Text/Write module, is that you can attach a little picture to it.

I'm showing you an example here of what the picture will look like on this module.

This is a picture I took of an eagle, on a trip to Hells Canyon...

Another way to attach a picture is to use html in the body of the text, say I want to attach a picture I have on the web already. You find that picture on the web, right click on it. Go to properties, then copy the address (URL). Then come back to your lens and type (img src="right click and paste the url here") again just replace the ( ) with < >.

It would post like this:

This is my dog "Smokey", isn't he adorable?

or even bigger if your picture on the web is bigger, for example:

photo (c) no copying without permission from photographer, being me. This photo is called "The Perfect Catch" note the breadcrumb in the seagulls beak!

Another secret for a text module

Adding a Blue Background to it!

So you want to add a little color to the background, so it will look like this:

Isn't this great, a blue background to highlight your lens!

The Code to do this is: (p style="padding: 5px; background-color: #E1E8F2; font-weight: normal; border: dotted 2px #00518A;")Your text goes here(/p)

Then just replace the ( ) with < >.

Or maybe you want a blue background with a nice pretty big letter in front like this. To do this just type:

(p style="padding: 5px; background-color: #E1E8F2; font-weight: normal; border: dotted 2px #00518A;")(b style="font-size: 35px; font-family: Georgia, Palatino; float: left; margin-right: 4px; line-height: 1em; color: #00008B; background: #0000FF; padding: 0 5px; font-weight: normal;")Your first letter here(/b)(/p)

and of course replace the ( ) with < > where ever you see them. :-)

At the bottome of the text you want highlighted type (/p) to end it. (of course replace the ( ) with < >

Try a different color...

Maybe you would like to try orange...

Maybe you don't care for blue, and want to try another color like say "orange" to the background, so it will look like this:

Isn't this great, an orange background...very cool isn't it?

The Code to do this is: (p style="padding: 5px; background-color: #FCF8C0; font-weight: normal; border: dotted 2px #FF9900;")Your text goes here(/p)

Then just replace the ( ) with < >.

Or maybe you would like to try pink instead, because oh I don't know, you want some flare, or pink is your favorite color! Try this code:

(p style="padding: 5px; background-color: #FFB6C1; font-weight: normal; border: dotted 2px #FF1493;")

Replace the ( ) with < >

Now when you get to the end of the print you want highlighted in that color, you need to tell it to stop by typing (/p) again...replace the ( ) with < >

The possibilities are endless, well almost endless...you can figure out some colors of your own...the numbers you see in the html equation are actually color codes. You can find more color codes here:

HTML Color Names

Have fun with it!

How about a Big letter at the beginning of your first sentence

Like this? I think it will give your webpage a very classy look. Don't you?

To use this code just type:

(b style="font-size: 35px; font-family: Georgia, Palatino; float: left; margin-right: 4px; line-height: 1em; color: #00008B; background: #0000FF; padding: 0 5px; font-weight: normal;")Your First letter here in Capitals(/b)

And again, just replace the ( ) with < >

This is an Amazon lens, which has some cool features

You can choose what you want to be shown from Amazon...

It will give you two choices...you can let Amazon pick what they show for you, and it will allow you to put in a description word that will guide their choice to what you would like to see...(For example on this one I will put "camping" in, just to stay with the outdoor theme) and click on "let Amazon pick", it allows me to choose the product type "sports and outdoors" and enter the search word "camping", it also allows me to put how many product to display, we will just put three, to keep it shorter, you can choose up to five)

If you decide to use the option "Let me pick" ...you can select specific items from your search to put here. Even your own items if you are selling on Amazon.

Now another neat thing about the Amazon module is...if someone uses your link to purchase something, your lens will get some royalties from that purchase! Very COOL!!!

This is the New Flickr Photos Module

This module is really neat, it will allow you to play a slideshow of sorts....

You can upload a whole bunch of pictures of whatever you want to display here. I've used it to show pictures of my father during world war II on one lens, and to display artwork on two others.

It will take a little time to upload each one, and the pictures may have to be re-sized smaller. But it is well worth it if you have pictures you want to display.

You can also just like Amazon, let Flickr pick the content. Then you wouldn't have to upload any. You could just pick a certain "tag" of a picture type. For this one we will put "The Grand Canyon" in to show what they show with that search.

Or you can pick your own, or share your own "photosets" that you have uploaded to flickr.

***New*** Module, a Text module with a BIG Picture

I love this module, look how big the picture is!

This is a picture I took at Yellowstone. (c) All rights reserved.

I wanted to also show you how the Flickr can be used for your own pictures.

This is some of my artwork displayed

You can see how when you do your own, it plays a slideshow and is a lot larger...

Just so you know you have the choice!

This is the "New YouTube vids" Module

Do you have a favorite "You Tube Video" that you want to share?

In this module again, you can let Youtube pick, and put in a search criteria, or you can pick them specifically.

For and example, let's see if we can find a youtube video on the lion that hugs the lady...it is adorable and one of my favorite. So I am going to select "Let youtube pick" and put the search in as "Lion Hug" and select "full size video"...

And this is what we get...

That's the right one...turn up your sound...it is a very special hug!!!

But if they want to actually look at the product, they can click on the title line and look at it.

Very cool lil link in this day when we all should be "Going Green"

This is a cool link to tips for going green!

Your turn: Add your favorite tips for making great lenses.

Go niche!

Lenses on niche topics, like a comparison list of the 10 best organic peanut butters, or your personal review of Lost Odyssey, or a debate over who the final Cyclon is in Battlestar Gallactica--these lenses do better than generic mainstream pages like "Buy an iPod here."261 points

Share your passion!

Assuming you're passionate about your topic, you're probably always talking about it, reading about it, finding out new tidbits. When you learn something new, add it to your lens. If you see an interesting discussion in a forum, turn it into a poll or a debate. Passion shows!221 points

Reread your lens

When writing, its easy for the eyes to skip over silly little typos. If you go back and really read it a few days later... The little things will jump out at you.
Liz142 points

Link from your lens to other lenses and websites, and more importantly link TO your lens, from your website, blog, forums, comments on other peoples blogs, other peoples lenses, web directories, your email .sig file, and - basically - whever you can place a link on the WWW!137 points

Update Your Lenses Frequently

I keep a notebook with a running list of various ideas to add/change my various lenses.
http://www.squidoo.com/kidsandmoney130 points

Add Link in Your Bio

Put links to all your lenses in your Bio115 points

Share what you know!

I have been trying to do online marketing for the past three years with some success, but when I started my demon drawing lenses and other related stuff elsewhere on my blogs, the traffic I have recieved is just impressive than all that has gone before..77 points

Guestbook Please

I'm really disappointed when I read through a lens, like it, but there is no guestbook to add my two cents worth. See there isn't one on this lens ... but you've allowed us some room here. Thank you!71 points

Add a Table of Contents

Especially if your lenses are content-rich (as they should be, of course!) and broken into multiple modules in digestible-size chunks of information (ditto), a Table of Contents gives visitors to your lens a great preview of what they can expect to find in your lens, and why it's worth reading on. Or, for someone who's looking for a specific type of information on your lens, a TOC lets that visitor jump directly to the relevant content on your lens with just one click.68 points

Variety is good

Mix up different types of modules. I try to have a module with only text followed by a module with pictures (say the amazon-module). Just to mix things up a bit and create a more visually appealing lens.66 points

Give Credit where credit is due

Be sure you link to other people's web sites or lens if you use their material.61 points

Relevant, Relevant, Relevant!

Though this may seem fairly obvious...focus on it, and keep your content "relevant." It doesn't ALL have to be about "one thing" as long as it is relevant to the the main topic of your lens, and that gives you more keywords and tags. You can also do a keyword search and see what keywords will work best with your content, and utilize them.55 points

Write it from the heart

No one can surpass the writing of the heart. When it comes deep inside from the heart, your lens will really stand out. Your lens will be the genuine of all lenses....You can see if the writer wrote it for money alone or not...We can make profits in Squidoo but if you can write it straight from the heart, you will gain more than just money....49 points

UPDATE LIKE ALL THE TIME!

I can't stress this enough, I've been neglecting mine lately and boy does it show!41 points

Write Like You Speak

Be yourself and others will reward you for it.41 points

Offer Something to your readers - an online award

I'm really passionate about my subject. And I started the Purple Paw award at my lens to give to other lenses that I find to be exceptional and dog related. People submit their links in the Plexo and I get more exposure. A win win for everyone.40 points

ADD A GREAT PROFILE PICTURE

I just joined, and it seems that the profile picture captures people's attention more than text.

By the way, I am looking forward to lensing away my weekends!37 points

Save Your Visitors Time

If your lens offers some services or products - do not just describe them. Remember to link exactly to where the services / goods can be purchased.37 points

Dont try to make it perfect

If you do this then you will lose the real reason your makeing it!36 points

Research your Titles

do keyword research before writing your titles... it really helps to have keyword focused (not keyword stuffed) titles35 points

Remember to click the Publish Button!

Are writing your lens remember to click the Publish button, as it has taken me a extra week to get my site published, I thought after saving it, that was all there was to it, and could not understand why every time I check it, it was under construction, I got very annoyed, but I finally made it.
There now I feel better about this program, as I have it published now35 points

This helped me! =)

It is a very good article to read, it really helped me. I will start to use your methods wright away ;)34 points

Find relevant books to share on your site

Adding books for sale from Amazon on your topic, or highlighting a particular book adds links from your site and also can add income if purchased.
www.squidoo.com/hotrealestateseattle34 points

Don't put off creating a lense

Like they say, "There is no time like now!".
Just Do It!

Submit, Experiment, Test and go with what works.34 points

Another Great Tip

Another great tip is to think about adding links to your other lens'. In fact when you think about starting a new lens, try to create a flow with all of your lens', then you can link them so people can travel within your lens'. www.squidoo.com/howtobuildyourownlens32 points

Squidoo Tips

These tips are amazing to improve your squidoo lenses and will drive targeted traffic to your page.32 points

Definetly Change Things Up

Update your Lens to keep people coming back to it and checking for updates that are relevant to your Lens.28 points

Don't Monopolize Lens with ADs

It looks tacky and unprofessional.28 points

Convey Your Passion for Your Subject

If you are anything like me, when someone writes about a subject with an obvious interest or passion then I feel much more engaged. Write in such a way that your readers feel compelled to keep reading,27 points

Add a Coundown Clock

Using a countdown clock it puts emphasizes important information and deadline time to participate. Visit my lense at http://www.squidoo.com/dnavitaminlaunch and click on Countdown link to see if you like it. I've received some great feedback. I would like your feedback.27 points

Keep it readable!

Please try to keep your content readable by checking for grammatical and ortographic errors! Some of us get very annoyed when we find a misspelt word or something that doesn't make much sense. It takes our concentration away from what we're reading! So don't forget! :)27 points

Using Firefox spell checking

Firefox has a built in spell checker. Use that to eliminate many of the typos.26 points

Featured Lenses

Make more then one lens and link them together using the Featured Lenses modules.26 points

Pay it forward

Offers a fine gift to others sites but also allows you to be able to give something back.25 points

Do the Research for a Specific Audience

If someone is looking for something, put a list of links and reviews on your lens. You can use mine as an example if you want, notice the update notes.
http://squidoo.com/livesuccess21 points

Write about something your interested in and get your link out there!

I use twitter and forums I am on to get my link out there for others to check out. I like what I write about and that helps!20 points

Hubpages

Build a few hubpages and use anchor text link to your great Squidoo Lens. This will boost your traffic in a matter of days.5 points

Not to long

I cant tell you how many times ive stopped reading something important cause I was impatient. Sometimes you just have to give them the straight up.3 points

Love Your Own Lens

It's redundant, but oh, so important. Write with passion. Love what you're writing about, the people you're writing for, and the content you're providing.3 points

Remember the net is world wide

Spelling is different in different countries. Your keywords may not be my key words. I'm Canadian so I spell odour rather than the U.S. odor and neighbour rather than the U.S. neighbor.2 points

Where topic allows (most) - use HUMOR!!!

People like to laugh, or at least chuckle, or at least smile. Laughter, after all, is the best medicine! Why not? Everyone seems to be LOL all the time anyway!!!!1 point

Participate

The more you participate on Squidoo the higher rank your lens will receive. This includes everything from updating your own pages to voting and sharing feedback for others. Everything helps a little bit.1 point

Comment on others Squidoo Pages

You always like it when someone takes the time to comment on your page, so comment on others! Share the love.1 point

Pertinent pictures

Make sure your images are relevant to the lens topic1 point

Our hearts are our best niches!

After struggling for content and niches and topics like something I must get from somewhere "outside" of my head, I've found out that the results of my effort were far from what I've expected. Then I've simply decided to give myself a break and write from my heart. And guess what! It all somehow became easier! Now my head is full of ideas and topics I'm gonna write about and it won't be just a hard work anymore, but a huge joy too. Results? You'll see:-)1 point

Add lots of tags

Add tags (search words) to your lens that are on on your subject. You will find them in the search section of Squidoo. Make sure when you test them that your lens is on the first page of the search.1 point

Do something your interested in, and do it alot!

Sounds silly, but if you do a lense or site on a topic you are really interested in, you will find it easy to create alot of compelling and intresting content, which in turn will get linked to because it's good... hey presto, a busy lense/site. Inertia Reel1 point

Contribute, contribute, contribute!

By adding contributions that are not self promoting you will build up a degree of confidence. If all you do all of the time is promote your own lenses or write complete drivel, people just will not take you seriously. After you have gained confidence and proven to people that you are willing to make good contributions to discussions, you can slip in a bit of self promotion. People like to see things that are helpful and so if that is what you provide. people will appreciate your work and share i...1 point

Update Early Update Often

Make new friends by grabbing content and linking to it. It's an easy way to build links for fellow webmasters and get noticed when you update.0 points

Think of your lens as a valuable resource

Include the what, when, where, why, where and how about your subject. Define words. Provide resources. Include everything relevant to the subject your are making a lense about so that when a reader comes across it the lens serves as a valuable resource of educational information.0 points

Continue to tweet your lens

if you keep in contact with your twitter account it will boost your ratings0 points

Capture Your Inspiration Immediately

When an idea hits you that you can share through a lens, write it down, email it to yourself, put it in a sticky, or whatever you have to do to remember that fleeting inspiration.0 points

Enrich and Empower Others

When you have dug, researched, and spent much energy in finding an answer to a problem for yourself, share your results with others. That latest breakthrough in cancer research, the online school that allows you to use career/life experience toward your degree, the mega deal you found on a quality laptop.... Sharing your knowledge is a rewarding way to help other people.0 points

Share your proffesional secrets

what's your occupation? you should know some interesting things, secrets or tip... why don't you share it with others!0 points

Add Lots of Great Photos and Images

Use the informative lens put together my master Squidders to find out where the free ones are, then use their techniques to place the in various modules -- not just the ones that have an upload button.0 points

White Space

Allow for some extra white space on your pages.0 points

Write high quality and extremely useful content

If your content is good enough you should be able to add a few links on your own and begin acquiring new links from others readers, lenses, blogs, websites, etc....The more links you get....the more traffic your lens will get.0 points

But that's no easy task when you've been cooped up in an empty Cape Town safe house for a whole year. Weston realizes that a prime opportunity is headed his way, however, when he learns that former agent Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) has been captured after nearly a decade on the run. Frost is about to become Weston's one and only guest at the safe house, and the fledgling agent is determined to handle the situation like a true professional. But by selling U.S. secrets to countries like North Korea, Frost has made more than his fair share of enemies in high places, and shortly after he arrives at the safe house, all hell breaks loose. A small army of gunmen are determined to see Frost dead. Meanwhile, Weston will do everything in his power to protect Frost, regardless of his crimes. Now Weston's only hope for getting out of this alive is to find out who's gunning for them, and seek out someone he can trust before it's too late. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
3. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - $27.3M

DeHaan plays Andrew, a angsty teen whose mother is dying and whose father takes out his violent frustrations out on the boy. As a result, Andrew starts filming everything around him, including the dreadful night that he, his cousin Matt (Alex Russell) and the soon-to-be senior class president, Steve (Michael B. Jordan), wake up with superpowers after exploring a condemned piece of land housing an unexplained power source. The three bond over their newfound abilities, with Andrew clearly leading the pack in terms of control and strength. Despite their noble intentions, a darker streak appears in one of them as the other two try to take control over a situation that soon spirals into homicidal madness -- all of which is captured on camera. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

This is your guestbook module

This is one I would suggest everyone have on their lens

It is important to give people a place to contact you, and share thoughts and ideas.

Which if you have any questions, or ideas I would love to hear them here.

I always select that anyone that visits can comment, but you can make it private to only Squidoo members if you want to.

You can also select whether you want them approved right away, or if you want to see them first. My preference is to see them first and approve them. But again, this is your choice!

Stumble It!

submit

How to put a photo behind your text

If you copy and paste in the following code into your text area your module:

p style="background: url(http://static.squidoo.com/resize/squidoo_images/-1/draft_lens2205404module11838224photo_1222919409small_blue.jpg); "

Place that code inside these brackets < > replacing my image url with yours. (This is everything that is showing inside the parenthysis in the above code)

Then type whatever you want to say. At the end of your paragraph type /p also putting it into brackets < >.
