How To Buy Mineral Makeup & Not Waste Your Money - Honest!

I've made mistakes. Yes, mineral makeup buying mistakes. Literally hundreds of dollars worth of mistakes - and I've got drawers of baggies and jars to prove it! I'd like to help keep you from making the same mistakes I did when I first started trying - and buying - mineral makeup. This guideline will not only teach you a little bit about getting the best mineral makeup for your money, but also keep you from amassing drawers of unwanted cosmetics!

First things first... I'm not opposed to little baggies of Mineral Makeup, heck, I sell them (as sample sizes, listed as such, and labeled with all product information)! I'm also not opposed to small jars for packaging cosmetics. What I am opposed to is getting them in the mail when I thought I bought a 'full size' product! Lots of colorful little bags and jars with who-knows-what in them. I'm positive that I'm not the only one who has fallen into this buying trap.

But how does this happen? One reason is because the FDA does not regulate the hundreds of new companies jumping on the Mineral Makeup bandwagon (myself among them), nor the sizes offered, ingredients used, prices listed or cosmetic packaging used by them. Did you know... that as long as one ingredient in a cosmetic is a mineral, it can be called Mineral Makeup? The only FDA guideline that applies is that ingredients must be labeled on the packaging. This means that you can be dishing out your hard-earned cash for 'less-than-mineral' cosmetics.

Rule of Thumb: Read listings, product descriptions and labels very carefully! Make sure the description is clear as to what size and what type of packaging you're buying (yes, you're buying the packaging, too).

That brings us to the topic of mineral makeup sizes. There is no complete standard, unfortunately, which makes it extremely hard to comparison shop. But almost all sellers use gram size jars to package their cosmetics, and that does help make comparing prices a bit easier. Unless you have a conversion chart handy at all times, it may be difficult to decipher descriptions. Now I could give you a chart (and I will... sort of), but there's actually a simpler way to determine best buys.

But before that, here's your chart - really just an eyeball-guide:
3 gram jar - lid is about the size of a dime, jar is about ¼" deep = holds a bit under 1/2 tsp minerals = should be about 1g Net Wt.
5 gram jar - lid is about the size of a dime, jar is about ½" deep = holds roughly 1/2 tsp minerals = should be approximately 1.5g Net Wt.
10 gram jar - lid is about the size of a quarter, jar is about ½" deep = holds about 1 tsp minerals = should be roughly 3g Net Wt.
20 gram jar - lid is a little larger than a half dollar, jar is about ½" deep = holds about 2 tsp minerals = should be around 6g Net Wt.
30 gram jar - lid is the same size as a 20g jar, jar is about 1" deep = holds about 3 tsp minerals = should be about 10g Net Wt.

Scenario: One seller offers a Mineral Makeup Kit online for $29.99 and a 2nd offers one for $39.99. At first glance, the $29.99 kit is the best value. Upon closer inspection of the description, the seller of the $29.99 Kit is offering two 5 gram jars of foundation, two 5 gram jars of blush, one 5 gram jar of concealer and one 5 gram jar of mineral veil. The 2nd seller offers one 30 gram jar of foundation, one 20 gram jar of mineral veil, one 20 gram jar of blush and one 10 gram jar of concealer. The 1st seller may be charging less, but is also only offering only a total of 30 grams of product. The better value is actually with the 2nd seller, who is offering 80 grams of product for $39.99.
(A quick note: A 5 gram jar doesn't actually hold 5 grams of product, etc. - but for price comparison purposes, it's okay to just use the overall jar size. The amount of product in a same size jar should vary minimally)

Okay, that was an easy one. But what if two sellers are offering the same product in a 20 gram jar and the price difference is $2.00? Then it's time to look at the label! You want to check for 'filler' ingredients: those that increase the overall density of the product without adding any (or duplicate) intrinsic value. Does name brand matter? It does to many of us. We see their ads every day. The famous mineral makeup companies have worked hard to establish their brand, educate the public and earn buyers loyalty and trust. However, you'll pay more for their products. And possible get caught up in a program of buying their products every other month or so, whether you want/need them or not. Even more reason to take a look at the independent companies who incur less overhead and therefore can charge much less for similarly-crafted products.

Be sure to look for companies that offer sample sizes - try before you buy the full sizes. A minimally priced sample will allow you to test the product for at least a few days to see if it works for your skin, if the shade or color is correct and if you actually like the product. It's a great way to discover if your investment will truly be a good buy for you.

So what does it really come down to? I hope this guide has helped show you that, as with most everything else, the best value will always be in largest sizes of the highest quality product offered at the most reasonable prices.
