The lawn is the first thing people notice about a home. How to care for a lawn is one of those chores that all homeowners must consider. How to weed, feed and mow are all things that lawn care entail.

Proper lawn care will provide you with a beautiful and lush grass during the growing season. There are many factors to consider if you want to have a gorgeous lawn. How to care for a lawn is not simple but with a little research and interest anyone can have the yard that they always dreamed of having.

Weeding Your Lawn

You should keep grassy weeds and crabgrass seeds from germinating. This can be done by using a Crabgrass preventer which kills this weed before it gets a chance to germinate.

Keeping the weeds from growing will help you prevent the spread of weeds. Although, mowing the lawn regularly keeps the weeds relatively low, it is better to dig up the offending weed one by one if you do not wish to use a weed killer. Make sure that the small holes that you have dug up are covered by sod immediately.

Use herbicides for minor weed treatment. Again pre-emergent herbicides are ideal for weeds like crabgrass.

Proper Lawn Care Requires Aeration

To keep the yard healthy, lawn care activity that should be used done is to aerate the yard. This is a system where "plugs" or small holes are created in the grass in the spring. This helps to let the yard breathe and get much needed moisture into the roots of the grass.

Aeration is the best alternative to prevent the overcome the thatch problem. This can help prevent the growth of thatch and it is especially helpful if there are still very few of them to contend with. The process will allow the soil to have a facilitated passage for water, air and nutrients.

Mowing Your Lawn

Refer to Your Growing Zones

Lawn Mowing Care for Zones 1 to 3 - In early spring, you should cut your lawn no more than two and a half inches. The next mowing for your lawn is summer and you'll mow up to three inches this time just to safeguard your lawn from drying or burning out. Mow it once more during the fall just to hinder growth then make one last appointment with your mower before snowfall.

Lawn Mowing Care for Zones 4 and 6 - Start mowing late in spring. You should cut it no more than two inches. For the summer, cut it no more than three inches for the same reasons stated above. For fall you'll simply mow until you do not have to. You need not mow during the winter.

Lawn Mowing Care for Zone 5 - Start mowing early in spring, but cut grass no more than two and a half inches. As for the summer, you can cut more - but still no greater than three inches of course - to prevent your lawn from the usual risks of drying and burning. You probably won't have to mow from fall to winter but you should fertilize and care for your lawn properly during these seasons.

Lawn Mowing Care for Zones 6 and 7 - You will have to start mowing early in the season. Start moving at spring's arrival, making sure not to cut more than the usual two and a half inch rule. Do the same for the summer and early fall. You won't have to mow your lawn in winter typically.

Lawn Care Requires Proper Watering

Watering is on of the fundamental lawn care chores that must be accomplished. A sprinkler system with enough water heads to cover all of the grass is one way to water a large area. Some regions don't need sprinkler systems as they get enough water on a regular basis. These areas will often have other issues including the growth of mushrooms in the yards as a result of so much water.

Watering your grass too much creates more damage than water it too little. The majority of grasses weekly need 1-1.5" of water. For clay soils, this dampens the soil 4-6" under the surface, while sandy soils that increases to 8-10" underneath the surface. A rain gauge can be used to determine how much water the lawn is getting and can be used to determine how much water is needed.
