I Learned How to Change Career Fields to Bring New Opportunities in a Desperate Hour

The economy was withering and with it the industry I worked in. It quickly became apparent that I needed a new job in a new career field in order to survive these hard times. Changing career fields is a lot like starting over. So much needs to be relearned and old skills need to be dusted off and sharpened.

Down Sizing - Banckruptcy - And a Vanishing Career

Like me, you also may be wondering how to change career fields

Many Americans have lost their jobs due to the state of the economy just like I have. Across the board, in almost every industry people have lost their jobs. Most of us are finding it difficult to find another job in the same career field, because of corporate down-sizing and companies going bankrupt. In some cities, it may be necessary to think about different career paths to get back to work. I think it's safe to say that many people are like myself and would want to know how to change career fields so that they can get a new job to support their families once again.

Making a Choice Can be Scary

Choosing how to change career fields late in life can be quite scary, but if you are forced to do so it can also be a second chance at getting the career that you've always wanted. So, where do you start? The first thing I did was take a personality test so that I could identify the areas that I had interest and skill in. It has been so long since I've thought about what I enjoy doing or am good at that I needed to do this test to refresh my memory. Looking at the interests outside of your current career can be one way of finding the right career field to pursue. Once I identified the area that I enjoyed and excelled at, I began to focus my training and applications toward that goal.

When Choosing a New Career Path

A career advisor can be a big help

I also decided to visit a career advisor for help in determining which area to pursue. She helped me to not only understand what I really wanted to do, but also which careers would realistically meet my expectations and were doing well in the market now and in the near future. This is another avenue to approach when thinking of how to change career fields. There is no need to look for another job in the same career path that does not satisfy you.

Changing Career Fields

Completing the process brings new skills

Learning how to change career fields, from laboring to teaching or from being a Stay-at-home mother who needs to return to work is a skill in itself. You need to find the proper training, learn the new skills and discover how to write a resume that will impress prospective employers. All of these things helped me get back to work in just a short time.
