How to Crochet a Cow Christmas Ornament
Materials:
Size G crochet hook
Worsted weight yarn: 1 oz white, small amounts pink and black
2 11mm black buttons
Small red bow
Polyester fiberfill (small amount)
Sewing needle
White thread
Craft glue
Yarn needle
Size: 3"x4 1/2"
Gauge: 4 sc=1" 5 sc Rnds=1"
Notes: Weave in loose ends as work progresses. DO NOT join rnds unless otherwise indicated. Mark end of each rnd w st marker.
Cow head:
Beginning at base of head with white, ch 2
Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hk (6 sc).
Rnd 2: 2 scs in each st around (12 sc).
Rnd 3: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, rep from * around (18 sc).
Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, rep from * around (24 sc).
Rnd 5: *Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, rep from *around (30 sc).
Rnds 6-10: Sc in each st around (30 sc).
Stuff bottom half of head and continue stuffing as work progresses.
Rnd 11: *Sc in next 3 sts, sc next 2 sts tog (to dec), rep from * around (24 sc).
Rnd 12: *Sc in next 2 sts, sc next 2 sts tog, rep from * around (18 sc).
Rnd 13: *Sc in next st, sc next 2 sts tog, rep from * around (12 sc).
Rnd 14: *Sc next 2 sts tog, rep from * around (6 scs).
Finish off, leaving a 12" length of yarn for sewing. Weave yarn in and out of sts of last rnd. Pull yarn to close opening, knot to secure.
Nose:
With black, ch 6
Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Sc in each st on opposite side of foundation ch (10 sc).
Rnd 2: 2 scs in each st around (20 sc). Join w sl st in 1st st of rnd, finish off, leaving a 12" length of yarn for sewing.
Using yarn needle and length of pink yarn, make 3 small sts on either side of nose. Knot yarn in back to secure. Using photo as guide, sew nose to head.
Ears (make 2):
With black, ch 5
Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Sc in each st on opposite of foundation ch (8 sc).
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sc). Join w sl st in 1st st of rnd. Fasten off, leaving a 12" length of yarn.
Using yarn needle and length of pink yarn, make 4 long sts in center of each ear. Knot yarn in back to secure. Using photo as guide, sew one ear to each side of head.
Sew or glue buttons to head.
Glue bow to top of head, in front of one ear.
With yarn needle and length of white yarn, insert needle through top of head to form hanging loop. Knot to secure.
