Getting Started
The first steps in origami are to learn the basic folds and basic patterns.The folds are very easy firstly if you fold the paper to make a V shape, that is called a valley fold.
If you fold the paper the other way up it is a mountain fold.
Easy so far, you will need the descriptive names as they are often shown on the diagrams used to describe origami shapes.
How to Do Origami: Basic Patterns
A lot of the patterns in origami start off with the same sequences or patterns. To save repeating those steps over and over again the patterns will often say starts with a bird base or a kite.
