    Torso, limbs, and face are routine and standard fare;
Real expertise in making a portrait is in drawing hair.

Very skillfully made drawings ... and lens.

Drawing hair and hands seem to be some of the hardest things to draw. Thanks for giving us these great tips. This is a great lens and we're all glad you made this helpful lens for the squidoo community.

Thanks Gary, glad you found it helpful. I have had a few people tell me that it's faces they find hard, and hair they find easy to draw. I knew there were already sites that gave lessons in drawing faces. I saw a lot of people online saying they couldn't draw hair, that's why I made this page.

You are very talented. Great job explaining how to draw hair. I am a graphic artist but I specialize in pencil drawings and am saddened that it seems to be a dying art in the digital age. Keep up the great work and maybe we can share some of our work with eachother!
  • ddixonart Jan 19, 2012 @ 12:49 pm | delete
My daughter likes doing graphic art with a tablet and stylus. I have the tablet and stylus right here as I type this. I just haven't had the time to learn it. But yes, I have received messages from people who are excited to see someone drawing "old school." I guess this will be a rarer art form as time goes on. I sure hope pencils don't become rare and expensive! Maybe we should stock up. LOL!

I think i have to learn to get patience to draw hair... I do the whole part and then when i comes to draw hair.. i dont keep on drawing only the out lines i do... i have now a drawing already laying for 2 months, just because i dont feel for doing the hair cause it will take to long..

    greetings
  • ddixonart Sep 15, 2011 @ 8:48 am | delete
If you are right handed, try to draw from left to right, even if it includes hair -- it sounds to me like leaving all the hair to do at once is either boring or overwhelming to you. I'd say do a little hair as you work throughout the drawing, that way you are getting it done, but not all at once.

Hey this is great! I'll try to do this even though I never drew anything of the sort. I would love to draw portraits!
I guess start simple and then do it with finer and finer detail, right?
  • ddixonart Jul 29, 2011 @ 10:52 am | delete
That's the idea -- but don't get too caught up in details -- you don't need to draw EVERY hair, but also keep in mind that sections of hair can also cause a little shadow on the sections of hair below. Adding in some darker details in the right places can add depth and realism.

Thanks so much for your very quick and helpful reply!!! :) ...I'm going to try your suggestions right now!...one last thing, the hair am trying to draw is very straight, thin and dark hair...thank so much again for your help and i will definitely coming back to make more questions!...;)
  • Annie Jun 21, 2011 @ 4:55 am | delete
Hi am new at drawing but really enjoy it and am trying to lern on my own...am trying to draw a face from a photo now and may be my question is a bit silly but am not sure how i can draw very dark eyes to look realistic ( i found easier to draw light ones since it's easy to play with the different shades to make it more realistic, i think)...also to draw hair what type of pencil works better soft or hard?...thanks!
  • ddixonart Jun 21, 2011 @ 6:55 am | delete
I absolutely understand what you are asking. Probably the best bet would be to use something even darker than pencil for the pupil of the eyes -- I like black micron pens (if you need a brand, look for Sakura or Pigma Micron). You can let that dry, then use graphite pencil over it to get it to blend nicely to the iris. (Because if you let it look TOO dark in contrast to the rest of the eye, believe me, it's gonna look creepy!) Then take kneaded eraser and lightly life a little graphite in a circle/oval in the space between the iris and the outer edge of the iris. This will make it look more ball-shaped like an eye is. I like to take a tortillon and softly blend a little bit of shadow in the edges of the eyes, because the lid creates shadow on the eyeball. Hope this helps!
  • ddixonart Jun 21, 2011 @ 6:57 am | delete
Sorry, I forgot to answer your question about graphite hardness. I think for most hair, you would be pretty safe with a 3B, but it depends on the hair you're drawing. 6B for the darkest parts sure puts a nice look of shine (but again, it depends on the type of hair, because not everybody's hair is going to be shiny). You can take a large sheet of paper and try the different leads on the point, the side, pushing hard or pushing soft, shaded etc...to see the different effects you can make with each one. Doesn't hurt to try this exercise with erasers too, to see what each tool can do.

Your advice on drawing the dark shapes first then filling in the light ares make total sense... I will try that on my next attempt to draw a face... I have to admit the hair is my ares of struggle for sure...

Oh good! Well, if you have any questions after reading this page and trying the advice, please come back and let me know or email me. I would like to keep improving the page. Don't you think it's our self-talk that can make it or break it? I do - I know I am mortified about drawing motor vehicles!
  • SLHamilton Jun 15, 2011 @ 1:06 pm | delete
Gorgeous drawings.. Absolutely Amazing what you can do with a pencil !!

I have no talent at all as an artist. I once took a 9 week class at a local art gallery. I painted some bushes in one of my paintings.. my husband asked why my sheep were green.. boo hoo :-( I did paint some really nice clouds though.
  • ddixonart Jun 16, 2011 @ 9:41 am | delete
Picasso and Van Gogh painted things "strangely," and Matt Groening used to draw Binky the bunny with one ear. But you don't hear much about the "normal" artists, so just have fun. If you have fun painting sheep green, go for it, why not? :) The question is, did the green sheep make YOU happy?

Great lens. I actually came across your lens when looking up information on mechanical pencils. You are very talented and I checked out your website as well, really great work. Definitely something I don't have a knack for. I'm a fountain pen fan or fancy pencils, etc so I actually started a blog sometime ago about fountain pens and pencils and whatnot. Anyway, great lens and if you want to check out my latest post on the Parker Duofold Pencil please do. I've written quite a few articles on the history of pens as well from many of the top manufacturers so you might enjoy that.

Thanks! I think it helps not to focus too much on thinking "I'm drawing hair," but just relax and thing of the lines as flowing. If you're too tense about it, the lines will end up choppy. Hope this helps!

  • ddixonart Dec 10, 2010 @ 4:10 pm | delete
Oh yes, hands seems very hard to draw, unless they are drawn very large. The best way I've found is to think of the fingers as sections (like columns or tubes)...that seems to work pretty well.

I wonder if you have used the ott light and what experience you have with it. I need a good light for drawing? Overhead lighting doesn't always do it.
  • ddixonart Nov 6, 2010 @ 10:19 pm | delete
Yes, I have model OTL-13TCG (it's the last one linked above, the gray colored one)...it sells for about $40. I do really like it, in fact, other people like it too, so I have to fight and say, "Hey, that's MY lamp!" The only thing about it is that the bulbs are about $15-$20, but they last a long time. I usually use a good discount coupon for our local arts/crafts/hobby store so I can get my bulbs for 40% off most of the time.

Thanks for commenting on my Squidoo page How To Draw Hair in Pencil! The advice I would give you is to just play with the pencil, the paper and the erasers, and see what happens! Just like children learn fast because they aren't afraid of making mistakes, don't be afraid to make mistakes, just experiment with your drawing and have fun!
