What IS Seasonal Affective Disorder(SAD)?

Seasonal affective disorder is a disorder that affects mostly women; nearly 25 million Americans. It causes depression and people running to the dessert table. It can be caused by a lack of light which happens in the wintertime because of overcast weather and little sunlight which can cause serotonin levels to be lowered. Not having enough serotonin in your body can affect your feeling of well-being. You need plenty of 'feel good' chemicals in your body to avoid this seasonal disorder. You also get hungry more because it regulates your hunger. That's why people snack for sweets more in the wintertime than the summer. More symptoms include lots of napping during the day, you have low self-esteem, you are more apt to be shy, you get easily irritable and oftentimes have panic attacks. And all of this is because you do not have enough serotonin in your body. You have to have enough of it to fight the sleeping substance in your body called melatonin.
