Taking surveys online is a great way to earn extra money, but there are so many low-paying survey sites, it kind of overwhelms the great opportunities that are still available. So, where can you find the good paying sites and how can you avoid the others?

First, you can check large forums. It is at these forums that people will honestly discuss their personal experiences with individual survey companies. You can get a very realistic idea of what to expect from certain companies, before you waste your time getting involved with them.

Second, you can search for a free list of survey companies. From these survey panel lists you should be able to distinguish which surveys are a good fit for you. If survey companies only offer sweepstakes as compensation, this may not be what you are looking for (though registering is not a bad idea, because they sometimes have great paying surveys anyway, and you can filter them from your email). If you choose to take the simple route and find a website with a survey list, be careful.

There are a lot of website that will gladly offer up their database of survey sites -- as long as you pay them for it. You don't need to pay for a list of survey sites. They good ones are always out there and should cost you absolutely nothing.

Lastly, keep in mind that if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Surveys are great extra income, but are not a resource to earn a full time living from. Unless you are single and still living at home with your parents, or are a student with minimal needs and expenses, surveys will not provide the resources you need to fully support you and a family.

Survey sites that tout you can earn $700 a week, or make it seem like $150/hour surveys are the norm, will likely be steering you toward whatever advertising is paying them best. This means that you will be headed toward plenty of low paying survey sites and websites that will ultimately spam you with everything imaginable in your email inbox. Look for site that give you what you would consider realistic expectations, because these kinds of sites frequently exceed what they tell you.

When it comes down to it, you should be thinking of surveys as an awesome, flexible part time job. The better paying surveys should always net you more than minimum wage per hour. If they don't, pass on them and take the ones that do. They are out there.
