5 Proven Tips To Get Kids To Listen To You
Tip # 1: Talk To Them Like Adults.
Kids hate being treated like kids. That's something a lot of grown-ups tend to overlook when trying to get kids to listen.
Instead of talking down to them like their opinion doesn't matter, treat them as you would adults. While there are certain topics that might be too mature for say a nine-year-old to understand, telling them there's nothing wrong (when something clearly is) won't help your case one bit.
Tip # 2: Earn Their Trust.
If you want to know how to get kids to listen to you, you've got to earn their trust first. Some children tend to be suspicious of anything grown-ups tell them.
In a way, these kids act like Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. Their distrust could have been the result of a negative experience in the past or the influence of other kids. However, once you earn their trust, they'll be much more willing to listen to you.
Tip # 3: Listen To What They Have To Say.
Do to other people what you want others to do to you. It's as easy as that. If you don't take the time to listen to what the kids have to say, then how can you expect them to listen to you?
Pre-school teachers know this for a fact. When a child comes up to them and complains he or she is nervous about meeting new friends, they acknowledge the said emotion (without judgment), and help him or her adjust to the class.
Tip # 4: No To Violence.
No matter how much you want to get kids to listen to you, you should never resort to violent means.
Shouting and calling kids names won't get you what you want. Hitting or pinching them won't do the trick either. You might intimidate them at first, but it won't be long before they start fighting back.
Tip # 5: Avoid Lecturing Them.
If you want to know how to get kids to listen to you, don't start your conversation with a lecture. Lecturing was our parents' way of getting us to listen. And to be honest, that didn't end up well for a lot of people.
Today's method is much more recommended. It involves you talking to the kids about what it is they've done in a manner that aims to encourage self-learning than self-loathing. The conversation is now two-sided. The kids hear you out and you hear them out.
Learning how to get kids to listen to you can be quite tricky, especially if you haven't had a lot of experience dealing with them. Don't look down on them and they'll be more willing to lend you an ear. You might be surprised, but most kids these days are more insightful and more capable of handling responsibility.

- Like #2. As parents, we need to patiently listen to our children. We also need to show our attention to them even if we are having conversation with friends.

- You made some good point Michael, i do agree with you on this technique, parents doesn't always take their responsibility these day, i mean, is it hard to be a parent? Does it require university degree to be one?.. you got the points, Even though I'm not a parent myself, however, I think that a lots of parent just follow the trend and what have been passed on to them. So the cycle continues. What we need to do more is to break out of the cycle. Thanks for sharing.

- Being a parent of three and a teacher, I find myself lecturing them on occasion and the body language says it all. In other words, they tune me out. Then I created a forum for all of them to address a situation and it worked like magic. You're on point Mr. Lee keep up the good work and great job you're doing. Many thanks

- Great suggestions. I really like # 5, talk to them like they're adults. Couldn't agree more. Kids are smarter than we give them credit for.
