How to Get Rid of Black Mold in House

We recently purchased a foreclosed home. During the inspection black mold was discovered on an exterior wall. Our first priority was how to get rid of mold especially black mold?

The home is 160 years old and we knew there was some presence of mold when we decided to buy the house. It had been closed up for almost a year with no heat or ventilation.

Removal of the black mold was not a major issue. We just removed the interior part of the wall and treated the studs. Mainly the mold was only on the interior portion of the wall due to a leaky window.

We also knew the foundation of the house had several leaks and that the basement was wet. Since it took so long to close on the house we went through the rainiest seasons we have here in Michigan. The basement also has a Michigan cellar which is always dark and damp.

Remediation of the mold in the basement will require us to secure up all the leaks in the foundation and replace boarded up windows to insure direct light flow and air flow.

As the house was closed up for so long there was a film of mold covering most surfaces. To eliminate this I washed all surfaces with a combination of bleach and water. Some areas I used white vinegar on.

The main problem currently is the furnace and duct work. I have a suspicion that there is mold in the duct work as well. I am not quite sure how I am going to handle this yet. I am now vacuuming all the ducts as best I can and am using white vinegar to remove the mold totally from reachable areas.

Water Damage Mold

Mold Removal Caused by Water Damage

Mold on StudsWater damage mold caused by the leaky window created the right conditions for the black mold to grow. Once the insulation got wet, the moisture remained in the dark recesses between the inner wall and outer wall. This is a very common environment for mold to grow and left untreated black mold is sure to follow. Paper backed insulation is known to cause mold when it gets wet. This moisture will stay in the insulation for quite some time. As this insulation was constantly getting wet every time it rained, the moisture soaked into the studs and after a while black mold grew.

As you can see by the photo both the insulation is moldy and the studs are also moldy. But the mold on the studs did not seem too serious so we took the proper precautions and started with our mold removal. We carefully pulled out the insulation that was covered in black mold. Then we proceeded to remove the mold on the studs, Read this article on How to Remove Mold on Studs and see what steps we took to get rid of mold in the bedroom.

We often use bleach and vinegar but the way the mold looks in the picture, you may have to do much work or have it done professionally. When we purchased an old house, we had the duct work done professionally.
