Choosing Tomatoes

It is very important that you choose the right type of tomato to grow.

What type of tomatoes to grow

Choosing the variety is important. You need to decide what characteristics are the most important to you, as well as the climate and disease susceptibility in your area. No one variety will perform best across all planting seasons and regions. Issues such as fruit firmness, size, shape, flavour and plant growing habits need to be considered.

You also need to decide whether you want a 'jointed' tomato variety or not. In other words, do you want a tomato variety that retains its stalk when picked or one that comes away cleanly from its stalk when picked. Many commercial organic and gourmet tomato growers choose 'jointed' tomato varieties because the tomato with its stalk attached looks attractive to the buyer. However, most home gardeners and non-organic commercial growers choose 'jointless' varieties.

The next choice is whether you want a 'determinate' or 'indeterminate' variety. A determinate variety grows to a bush about 1 metre (3 feet) high. At this stage it stops growing and sets a concentrated crop of tomatoes which can be picked over a few weeks.

Indeterminate varieties keep growing and can reach a height of up to 5 metres (15 or more feet) when fully mature. The fruit from these can be picked over a period of 12 to 20 weeks. These varieties are frequently used by greenhouse producers. Many cherry tomato varieties are indeterminate.

There are also 'semi-determinate' varieties which grow to about 1.5 - 2 metres (4 - 6 ft) and set fruit over a longer period than determinate varieties. These are the best suited to home gardens. They generally require staking and the tomatoes are harvested over 2 - 6 weeks.

Tomato Pollination

Tomato Flower Fertilization

Tomato pollination -- the fertilizing of the flower to make a fruit -- works best between about 70 and 85 degrees. If the temperature is consistently in the 90s, especially if it doesn't cool down much at night, the chemical composition of the pollen changes and it is less likely to take. High humidity also interferes with pollination. Often the problem clears up when the weather gets cooler and drier.

You can learn all the secrets of tomato pollination in how to grow juicy tasty tomatoes.

Manure

The best of all fertilisers

Manure remains the best of all fertilizers, with compost running a close second. Whilst the proportion of the three major nutrients that manure contains is rather low, and dollar for dollar artificial fertilizers do give more weight of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; manure rots down to make humus to benefit the soil and its micro-life.

When you buy manure, it is likely to be pretty fresh - and far too strong and 'hot' to use. You will need to leave it in a heap for six weeks or so; covered with a plastic sheet to keep the rain from leaching the nitrogen out. This also allows you to assess whether the manure contains a lot of weed seeds as they will germinate in this time. Those deep in the heap will probably be killed by the heat of fermentation and any that come up on the surface can be put on the compost heap. Or if there is room in the bin you can simply dump the manure on the compost heap.

Pest Control

Safe Pest Control Tips

Pest control must be done with utmost consideration to safety; safety in terms of the plants, animals and humans. This holds especially true for those with vegetable and organic gardens.

The main purpose of growing vegetables organically will be defeated if they become tainted with pest control chemicals.

Here are a few long-term maintenance tips to make pest control less damaging and more environmentally friendly.

1. Use the physical pest control process.

This may be accomplished through picking grubs off by hand, creating barriers and traps and plugging holes. Snails can be found hiding in damp places under rocks and towards the base of those plants with strap like foliage.

2. Apply biological pest control.

Encourage predatory insects such as green lacewings and dragonflies to feed on aphids and other pests that attack your plants. You can do this by placing a shallow bowl of water in the garden. Dragonflies especially will hover around water. Bacterial insecticides such as B. thuringiensis could also be used against caterpillars.

3. Only as a last resort should we turn to chemical pest control.

Organic pest control methods can be successful and the ingredients for many of the recipes can be found in the kitchen cupboards. If chemical sprays are really necessary, try and find the least-toxic. These include insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils, dehydrating dusts, etc.

4. Consider the use of safer pest control substitutes.

Recipes for alternative pest control include the following:

Against Green Aphids and Mites - Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid soap and a cup of vegetable oil. Dilute a teaspoon of this solution in a cup of water and spray on aphids and mites.

Against Cockroaches - Dusts of boric acid can be applied to cracks or entry points of these insects. Bay leaves on pantry shelves could also help in warding off these critters.

Make sure that the chemicals you use are made specifically for the insects you are targeting.

Tomato Harvest Times

When to Pick Tomatoes

Unless given protection, outdoor tomatoes are normally ready from about mid-August (northern hemisphere). You should pick the fruit as ripe as possible to get the best flavor. In late September cordon plants can be mulched with straw, then cut down from their supports (leaving the roots in the soil) and laid on the straw. Cover them with cloches to enable the fruit to ripen. Bush varieties can be covered with cloches as they are.

Tomato fruits are damaged by exposure to frost or very low temperatures, so if frost threatens uproot the plants and hang them by the roots in a greenhouse or indoors; the fruit will continue ripening slowly. Fruits can also be cut with about 10cm (4in) of stem, like a bunch of grapes, and hung between two horizontal canes to ripen outdoors or in a greenhouse. They can also be picked individually, wrapped loosely in paper, and put in a draw or cupboard to ripen.

I love tomatoes fresh from the garden. I grow mine in raised beds which allows me to plant them earlier (warmer soil) and extend the growing season.
