How To Hit Consistent Iron Shots

Playing the golf iron shots consistently well is a key element in playing good golf. In short, you have to learn to master the irons if you want to achieve, and play to, a low golf handicap.

Distance is not an issue with the golf irons, rather you play them for accuracy and consistency. It really is worthwhile spending a lot of time learning to play them consistently well.

Each iron club is made to hit the ball a certain distance, and you should know what that distance is for you. If you do not know, there is a way to find out, as I explain below.

How Far Do You Hit Your Iron Shots?

Do you know how far you hit your iron shots?

Here is an easy way to find out how far you hit your iron clubs.

Start with a five or six iron, whichever you find is easier to hit.
Take a dozen balls.
Hit a few shots with your six iron, to discover how far you typically hit the ball with the club.
When you know your range with the club, stand the given distance from the green and play twelve shots to the green. You want to know how often you hit the target. Obviously that figure will vary with your golfing ability.
To find a truly representative figure, hit about forty shots in total, to give you a benchmark figure.
Make a note of how many times you hit the green, and use that for future reference.
Try to do this exercise only when the weather conditions are normal, to give you a fair comparison.

How To Play The Iron Shots In Golf

Hitting iron shots consistently well takes practice

In the previous module I suggested finding your distance range with a mid iron, and it is useful to extend this exercise to all the irons in the bag, so you know how far you hit each iron club. Pacing the shots out in stride lengths will give you a near enough accurate yardage for each club.

Write the distances down so you have a record of them and carry them around with you for reference next time you play golf. By doing this you know what your capabilities are. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of the game.

Spend some time on the practice ground working on the correct ball position for each iron club. Obviously the lower number irons will be played further off the left foot than the higher numbers, like the pitching wedge which is normally played from the centre of the stance, for most shots.

It is important to set yourself up correctly with each club so that you are able to hit the iron shots crisply from the correct angle of attack.

Hitting Crisp Iron Shots Is The Objective

The perfect iron shot

If you watch any good golfer playing the iron shots, you will notice that they hit down on the shot, usually taking a divot after the ball is struck. This is the hallmark of a good iron shot, and is a good example for the handicap golfer to copy.

Try to get your balance right in order to set yourself up for playing powerful and accurate golf shots. Your weight should be evenly spread, on both feet, between the heels and toes.

One of the best ways of improving iron play in golf, is to video tape you swing. You can either do this yourself or have a friend photograph your swing from different angles so you can see for yourself how your swing looks to others.

This is especially useful when someone points out that your swing is too flat, for example, and you do not believe them. The camera, as they say, does not lie. You will have the video evidence to see for yourself if is true or not.

3 Golf Swing Drills - To Improve Your Long Iron Game

Golf - hitting long irons

One of the key concepts of hitting long irons correctly is the ability to punch them. This is in contrast to the woods, where you are trying to sweep the ball with these clubs.

Here are three golf swing drills to help you master the long irons.

1. Practice the late hit by holding the club with your normal grip, wrists fully cocked, at waist height. From that static position whip the hands into the shot and through the ball, just as you would a real golf ball. Teach your muscles to learn what these positions and actions feel like so you will be able to repeat them on the golf course.

2. Try to develop a sense of tempo with your clubs. Once you have done this try to play the irons at the same, even tempo. Don't try and rush the shot.

3. Keeping the right knee flexed as you make the back swing will ensure you only turn your hips 45%.

These are just some of the keys to hitting the iron shots in golf, and I hope you find them useful.

Hi I am Bruce Mackay and I love hitting my g10 ping irons they make my game come alive I just had to ad an approach wedge to my bag to get shorter shots because my wedge now hits one twenty five yards and I like to have a110 yard club that I can work with better. I also love having learned how to play a cut and a draw with my mid and long irons that is when golfing really gets to be fun when you can get the right shape shots to get birdies. The second year with my new irons I got a eagle from over a hundred yards out with out putting never. just chipped in.
