Hitting Consistent Golf Iron Shots

All golfers envy those who can hit those low, raking iron shots, bang on the flagstick, every time. I know I do. You know the kind of golf shots I mean. The golfer hits the ball, takes a divot, and the trajectory of the ball starts on a low flight path, and rises steadily, all the time travelling a great distance, until it peaks, still not very high, then slowly drops right on line with the flag stick. These kind of golf shots are what we all play the game for, the possibility of hitting iron shots just like those. You can savour these shots for a long time after you have played them. They linger long in the memory.

This lens looks at steps the handicap golfer can take for themselves to have those golf iron shots crashing down the flagstick, every time.

How To Hit Golf Iron Shots - The Correct Way

Hitting consistent golf iron shots is vital to low scoring

Here is what you need to do:

1. Posture. Stand with the feet pointing to the target, with knees flexed, back straight and the weight resting towards the heels.

2. Take the club back using a hand and arm swing, making sure the wrists are fully cocked.

3. Try to keep your body position as still as possible as your swing the club around your body.

4. You must make sure the left side of your body is cleared out of the way before you strike the ball. This will also enable you to generate lots of club head speed, and therefore hit the ball further.

5. Stay down as you hit through the shot and follow through keeping your arms straight. Seeing the ground after the ball has been played will stop you lifting your head too soon and the result will be a better golf shot.

6. You have complete control over how much power you use in playing your irons this way. Many top players play their shots well within their capabilities.

How to play iron shots in golf properly

1. Try to develop a sense of tempo with your clubs. Once you have done this try to play the irons at the same, even tempo. Don't try and rush the shot.

2. Keeping the right knee flexed as you make the back swing will ensure you only turn your hips 45%.

3. Make notes as to how far you typically hit the ball with each iron in your bag.

I hope you enjoyed these tips, and here's to good golfing.

A Useful Tip To Develop The Correct Hand Action

Practice is the key to mastering the golf irons

Here is a golf swing drill you can do at home, anytime you are away from the golf course. You do not have to drive to the range either.

With the irons, you have to develop the kind of golf swing where you hit down on the ball, letting the loft of the club do its job for you. This is where so many high handicap golfers fail. They convince themselves they have to assist the ball gain height, so the swing action becomes a scooping action. This is the opposite of what is required to hit iron shots in golf.

To learn this type of swing, you need to rehearse it many times, so it becomes second nature when you take to the golf course.

I like to practice with a mid iron. Hold the club with both hands spaced a few inches apart. Take the back swing to waist height, hold it there for a second, then continue with the downswing. As you do so, whip the club head through the ball. You should be able to feel the action of the right arm making this happen. Continue practicing this snap action with the wrists until you feel comfortable with it.

Then try holding the club with your normal golf grip, and try hitting a few shots, and see the difference it makes. What I like about this golf drill is you can practice it at home, anytime. It does not take long, and it will improve your strike with the iron clubs.

Review Of The Garmin Golflogix GPS 8

I was brought up without the luxury of the golf course gps and it wasn't until recently that I decided to research them, and I wrote a golf gps review. I wanted to know what I was missing. I had managed quite well judging approximate distances for my next shot on the golf course, by using the yardages on the scorecard, and by using the distance markers and other well known landmarks scattered around the course. There's nothing wrong with that approach.

The disadvantages of doing this are that it slows down your game of golf quite dramatically. Pacing backwards and forwards, especially where there are blind shots to play, drains your time. The other thing is that I sometimes get the distances wrong. This is especially true when the flagsticks are placed at the back of large greens. All this can be costly in terms of wasted strokes which can spoil an otherwise good round of golf.

I realised that a golf course gps can actually help improve your golf as well as give accurate distances to the target. It helps you focus better on your next shot and helps you to think your way round the golf course in terms of how far you hit the ball with each of your golf clubs, and the golf course gps gives you this information, if you don't already know it.

Here is my review of the Garmin GolfLogix GPS 8.
