Improving Self Confidence is Improving Every Area of Your Life

Self esteem and self confidence affect every aspect of your life. From career to friendships, from financial success to romantic relationships. It even plays a part in your health. Improving self confidence can increase your success in work, improve social skills, and dramatically lower stress levels.

This page will give you the tools to improve self confidence, and the knock-on effect from that will change your life.

What is Self Confidence?

Improving Self ImageSelf confidence is belief and trust in yourself. Self confidence is about how YOU see yourself, and although many of us are programmed into lack of belief and trust in ourselves as we grow up, it is only our own belief that makes the difference, not that of others.

Bearing this in mind, the key to developing self confidence is changing a core, subconscious belief, as well as conscious thought patterns and habits. The aim is to change the core belief and the thought habits in order to improve self confidence.

What we believe affects what we do, the decisions we make, and how we present ourselves to others. This, in turn affects how others react to us. Changing the way you see yourself, changing the way you treat yourself, will result in a different reaction from those around you, as well as different results in career, finances, health and all other areas of your life.

What Causes Low Self Confidence?

Of course, there are various factors that contribute to lack of confidence, but the root of it lies in core beliefs that the person will probably be unaware of.

Somewhere in the subconscious mind lies a belief along the lines of "I'm not good enough", "I'm not lovable", "I'm stupid", "I don't deserve", "I'm unworthy", "People won't like me unless I....", "I'm not good at....", "I'm hopeless with...." - to name only a few.. Those beliefs, in turn, will have been caused by automatic programming of the subconscious mind due to various experiences.

It's not always obvious what the link could be. Here's an example:

A child is taught to put others first - which is part of basic manners in many cultures. Every child has a unique life experience, and every child's brain will interpret experiences in a unique combination.

Depending on how it's taught, who teaches it, the child's own existing beliefs up to that point (as well as other experiences that are happening at the same time, and many other factors) for some children, the subconscious will interpret being taught to put others first as confirmation that they are less important than others. This will create a core belief that they are unworthy. The problem with this is, they will be unaware of this belief and where it comes from! They won't know that their lack of confidence is based on a false belief.

Because it's almost impossible to trace the core belief and the experiences that created it, it can be difficult to undo the cause, but knowing that lack of confidence is based on a false* belief of this sort, can help to move forward with changing it.

* Although the belief is false, it feels real - and that's because it is programmed into the subconscious as the "truth". It is a core belief, and therefore it's very difficult to consider it may be false. It takes determination, courage, and faith to challenge it and at least entertain the idea it may be false. There are many tools that can help with this as well. I have shared some of them in this lens.

Please don't hesitate to ask questions in the comments section below, I'm very happy to help where I can. All the best for your journey to Self Confidence. :)

Where to Start?

So, how to improve confidence? The first step is to acknowledge that it's all in your own mind. This can be the most difficult part because it feels so real.

Your conscious mind comes up with reasons for your lack of confidence - it justifies it. Whether it's to do with your appearance, your achievements, your relationships, or your personality - whatever your lack of confidence results in - it's only a symptom. The root is a belief. That's it. Just a belief.

Once you're able to accept that - at least intellectually - you'll be able to take the next step and make progress to improve self confidence.

Pay Attention to Self Talk

In order to improve self confidence you need to start paying attention to the things you say to yourself. They're bound to be similar to things you heard while growing up, and they will spotlight beliefs you may be otherwise unaware of. This is the beginning of how to improve confidence.

One way of handling this is to write down any negative phrases you say to yourself. Things like "Nobody likes me" or "I'm so....." or "Nothing ever...." or "I hate my...." and so on. Start making a note of those things you say to yourself. And then, next to each line, write the opposite. It doesn't matter whether you believe it or not. Just write it as an exercise. This will be the beginning of developing self confidence.

Treat Yourself as You Would a Loved One

If someone you care about was feeling insecure, what would you do for them? What would you say? How would you reassure them? Try doing the same for yourself - it takes some practice, but it's very effective!

Choose Activities You Love

Choosing activities and hobbies you enjoy, and are good at, can do a lot for improving self confidence. Dedicate some time each day to doing something you love - just because you love it.

LOL - At Least Once a Day!

It may seem unrelated, but laughter can actually help to improve self confidence! Reading or watching something that makes you laugh out loud each day can contribute to improving self confidence. When you laugh, the brain releases "feel good" chemicals, which contribute to not only your state of mind, but your physical health. And one of the results of feeling good, is an increase in confidence. Laughing out loud at least once a day is one of the fun ways to improve self confidence!

Tools to Improve Self Confidence

Different methods work for different people. Turning your lack of belief in yourself into strong belief in yourself is a challenge, but it can be done, and people achieve it all the time. It's a case of finding what works for you. Research the various methods, and go with what feels good! Here's a place to start.
