Are you frustrated with seeing weeds in your yard? Do you wander how to kill weeds? Well, I bought a house about 14 months ago and the yard was in terrible condition. There was more weeds then grass in my yard. My husband and I started spending money on improving the appearance of the yard and used tips that were passed down from family. Do you know what? We were doing everything wrong! So I decided to buy some books and to do some research about dealing with weeds. I just wanted to share some tips on how to deal with weeds and to prevent them from coming back.

How to Kill Weeds? Tip #1 Water deeply and Infrequently

To begin with, my understanding was that grass needs lots of water and need to be frequently water. I was watering my grass about everyday and couldn't understand why weeds were still popping up in my grass. Do you know what was wrong? Frequent watering will cause the perfect condition for seed germination for weeds.

On the other hand, you will need to water everyday when putting down fresh sod or grass seeds. The best method is to water deeply and infrequently. For this reason, I will be watering my lawn once a week for a couple of hours. In addition, watering deeply will encourage the grass to develop deep roots so the grass can stay healthier longer in case of a drought.

How to Kill Weeds? Tip #2 Get a Mulch Blade

Using a mulch blade to mow the lawn will return nutrients and moisture to the soil. Also, the best setting to use on the lawn mower is the highest setting.

Mowing the grass on the highest setting will allow the grass to get thicker and deep rooted. In addition, the thicker grass will eliminate weeds.

How to Kill Weeds? Tip #3 Apply Pre-Emergent in Early Spring

If you want to prevent weeds and crabgrass then use a Pre-Emergent in early Spring. To be on the safe, I will be putting a Pre-Emergent down on the first day of spring and on Good Friday.

How to Kill Weeds? Tip #4 Fertilizer Schedule

I will be fertilizing 5 times a year and will be using organic fertilizer. The months I will be fertilizing are February 16, May 25, July 4th, September 7th, and November 26th. If you are using chemicals then don't apply the fertilizer in July.

Moreover, it's not a good idea to apply chemical fertilizer during the hottest part of the year. This will stress the grass and lead to other problems. Organic fertilizer works different in the soil and can be used in warmer or cooler climate.
