Budgeting 101: Creative Grocery Shopping
Just like everything else, the cost of feeding your family is also on the increase. For some families, it is a fear that they would rather not face. Even if you have a large family, you can pare down your meal expenses.
It goes without saying that you need to budget for your grocery bill each month. But, even if you have a budget of $300 you might want to trim some of that. Don't worry. There are ways to eat more for less.
Grocery Shopping Tips
1. Plan your trips - It will take time the first time, but once you get a system going, you won't have to spend so much time on this phase. Create a comprehensive list of all that you will need. This means going through kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Use this as a master list. A second list will be for items that you use more frequently like milk, bread, eggs, toilet tissue and paper towels. More money will be spent on these items because, well, you need them more.2. Look at the circulars - Compare sale prices on the items you use when the papers come out each week. Circle where you will buy each item from. Some think that it is not worth it to drive to several grocery stores but it depends on how you chart your trip and what amount you are saving. Also use your store discount card for additional savings on these items. To get the most benefit from a store deal, buy up to your maximum allowed by the store.
3. Clip coupons - It used to be that you could just clip a few coupons and then use them at the store. Today, it's an art form. You can use newspaper coupons in combination with store savings card offerings. Also, don't forget about online coupons. There are coupon services that offer manufacturer's coupons that you can print and take to the store. Be careful though. Some stores are making it harder to use certain discount combinations after the airing of shows like "Extreme Couponing." But, the effort is worth it if you need to cut costs.
4. Buy in bulk - Even regular grocery stores have bulk aisles where you can buy what you need in greater quantity.
5. Visit other shops - How about the dollar stores in your area? Some also sell food. It is a good place to buy dried spices, juices and dry ingredients.
With a bit of creative thinking you can save even more money from your grocery shopping budget.

Budgeting Tips for the Single Mom
Budgets are important for everyone. It doesn't matter if you are a single parent or a two-parent household. Knowing where the money starts and ends each month provides a basis for better planning.1. Create a budget - Begin by writing down all of the income that is coming into your home. If you get regular child support payments or alimony, include that as well. All monies need to be accounted for. Now, write down all of your expenses. You may need the assistance of your bank statement for this the first time around.
2. Define discretionary from necessary expenses - Your monthly utility, insurance and mortgage are necessary. Add those up. Whatever you can do without are discretionary and can be evaluated and ultimately eliminated.
3. Pay bills as soon as they come in - When we wait, we are prone to spend the money on something else. Stand strong and put the checks in the mail as soon as the bills come in if you have the money in your account. If not, place checks in the envelope and mail them once your money hits the bank.
4. Set aside emergency fund money - Even if it is only twenty dollars a paycheck, putting aside money makes car problems and health emergencies easier to deal with financially. Over time, it will add up if you remain diligent.
5. Find low cost or free ways to have fun - Life is not about just paying bills each month. You want to enjoy it. Cutting money for entertainment doesn't mean going without entertainment at all. Search for ways to entertain the family without any money being spent.
6. Keep track of your expenses - For a month or two, you will watch all of your ATM withdrawals and other outlays of cash. It is tedious but you'll be surprised at things like how much you eat out or give in to impulse buying. Now you can control where the money goes.
Keeping track of your expenses may seem bothersome but it is worth it not only for the single mom but everyone who wants to improve their financial picture.
