How to Make a Website

Five steps teaching you how to make a website for profit or fun.

Choose Your Niche

If you are here looking for how to make a website, then chances are you already have some idea what you want your website to be about. But if you want people to be able to find your website through the search engines, you'll probably need to narrow your focus to a distinct segment of a market. That is your niche. Determining the phrases that people search on within your topic, and also have limited competition from other websites, then using them within your websites will bring you plenty of website visitors. A good way to find these keyword phrases is through Wordtracker. It is a time consuming process, but well worth the effort in the long run.

Get a Domain Name

There are two schools of thought when choosing your domain name. One is to brand yourself by using your name as your URL. The other is to use your main keyword phrase. If at all possible, I recommend using a keyworded domain name as your first choice. If you have the words people are searching for in your URL, it will help search engines find you.

If you can find both domains and you don't mind spending the extra $10, I personally think you should do both a branded domain name AND a keyworded domain name. You can direct several domain names to the same website. If you use more than one URL, make sure you use the keyword phrase URL as the main URL and the branding URL as the redirect.

If your hosting plan includes your domain name, then set that up there. Otherwise, visit the World's Largest Registrar - GoDaddy.com. Your host should have provided you with the dataname servers (DNS) necessary to point the domain to your website.

When people are new to the concept of how to make a website, they often get sucked in to purchasing website hosting that is too expensive for their needs. You should understand what you are buying before your give away your money. If your plan is to stay small with your website, then you should try GoDaddy.com Hosting Plans. If you expect to grow large or have multiple websites, you should look into HostMonster. They will give you the most bang for your buck and both provide award-winning customer service. Also, before you purchase, determine upfront if you will have any adult content web hosting needs.

Design

Again, you have a few options when it comes to website design. You can use a website builder if one came with your hosting plan. You can find and install a pre-made design usually called a website template. Or you can hire a website designer to create a custom design for you.

Add Content

Write as much of your own website content as possible using your selected keyword phrases throughout your pages. Add images to make your website pleasing to the eye. If you still need more content, there are plenty of article resources available.

A great way to get content for your website is by using PLR articles. The articles are prewritten for you to use and modify any way you want. It's alot quicker and easier than writing your own content.
