Christmas cards are sent to greet friends and family with loving wishes for Happy Holidays and wishes for joy in the New Year. They are sent to co-workers, teachers, customers and acquaintances to express appreciation for kindnesses shown. Christmas cards can be very elaborate or they can be a simple message written from one friend to another. They display a wide variety of art such as Christian art, Victorian scenes, and snowy landscapes. Pictures of Christmas decorations, such as holly,candles and decorated trees are common. Humorous cards are also a popular theme.

How I Made This Christmas Card

To make this Christmas card, you will need red and green acrylic paint, a small piece of sponge which can be torn from a regular household cellulose cleaning sponge, a small piece of narrow red ribbon, double sided scotch tape, and photos you want to use on the inside of the card. Use card stock from a copy shop and have them cut it in half, leaving two pieces 8-1/2" by 5-1/2". Fold each in half, making two greeting card blanks.

Draw a circle on the front of a card very, very lightly with a lead pencil. Dampen the sponge with water and
dip the sponge in green acrylic paint. Dab on a piece of scrap paper until you see the look you want. Dab around the circle, forming the wreath. Wash the sponge with soap and water for future use as acrylic paint
dries hard very fast.

Pour out a small amount of red acrylic paint and thin it slightly with water. Dip the wood end of a small paint brush in the red paint and practice dotting on the scrap paper. Dot on the wreath to decorate it with the red dots. Allow the card to dry thoroughly.

Using a paper punch, punch two holes near the top of the wreath on the front page only of the card. Add the red ribbon and tie it in place. With a fine tip marker, you can write "Happy Holidays" or another message in the lower area of the front of the card.

Make a Memory Christmas Card for your child to give to Grandmas, Aunts.

For special people, make a mini photo album..

On the inside of the card, with double sided scotch tape, tape photographs of family, places you have
visited, or pictures of last years' gatherings and sign it with love.

An additional small picture can be pasted at the center of
the wreath on the front of the card - a treasured keepsake.

Bible Verses for your Christmas Card

You can write bible verses on the inside of cards you make.

Here are some Christmas bible verses.

Luke 2:14
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Luke 2:11
The angel said unto them .... For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

A Christmas Prayer - Robert Louis Stevenson

A Christmas Prayer

Loving Father, help us remember the birth of Jesus,
that we may share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds and the wisdom of the wise men.

Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world.

Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting.

Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings,
and teach us to be merry with clean hearts.

May the Christmas morning make us happy to be Thy children
and the Christmas evening bring us to our beds with
grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake. Amen

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)

From Wikipedia:
A Christmas card is a greeting card sent as part of the traditional celebration of Christmas in order to convey between people a range of sentiments related to the Christmas season. Christmas cards are usually exchanged during the weeks preceding Christmas Day on December 25 by many people (including non-Christians) in Western society and in Asia. The traditional greeting inside a Christmas card often reads "wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year". There are innumerable variations on this greeting, many cards expressing more religious sentiment, or containing a poem, prayer or Biblical verse.

Christmas Card History

The first commercial Christmas cards were commissioned by Sir Henry Cole in London, 1843, and featured an illustration by John Callcott Horsley. The picture, of a family with a small child drinking wine together, proved controversial, but the idea was shrewd: Cole had helped introduce the Penny Post three years earlier. A batch of 1000 cards was printed and sold for a shilling each.

Early English cards rarely showed winter or religious themes, instead favoring flowers, fairies and other fanciful designs that reminded the recipient of the approach of spring. Humorous and sentimental images of children and animals were popular, as were increasingly elaborate shapes, decorations and materials. In 1875 Louis Prang became the first printer to offer cards in America, though the popularity of his cards led to cheap imitations that eventually drove him from the market. The advent of the postcard spelled the end for elaborate Victorian-style cards, but by the 1920s, cards with envelopes had returned.

The First White House Christmas Card

"Official" Christmas cards began with Queen Victoria in the 1840s. The British royal family's cards are generally portraits reflecting significant personal events of the year. In 1953, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first official White House card. The cards usually depict White House scenes as rendered by prominent American artists. The number of recipients has snowballed over the decades, from just 2000 in 1961 to 1.4 million in 2005.

Oh Little Town of Bethlehem

Written in 1868 by Philip Brooks, a priest. He was inspired to write this poem when visiting the town of Bethlehem three years earlier.

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHAM

O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by;
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary,
And gathered all above,
While mortlas sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth!
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently,
The wondrous gift is giv'n!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heav'n.
No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him, still
The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem!
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Immanuel.
