How I make Miniature Art ACEOs by Melody Lea Lamb

Ranked #7,656 in Arts & Design, #126,303 overall

Here is a step by step of how I create my miniature art.

I create miniature paintings called ACEOs of cats, birds, rabbits and fantasy beings. Each miniature painting is always and only 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches. I sell these miniature art gems from my Blog, and on Etsy. I also make high quality Archival prints of my miniature paintings which I sell through Bonanzle, ArtFire, and Gift Shop I sell the miniature art on porcelain Christmas ornaments , refrigerator magnets, ceramic art tiles, framed art, jewelry boxes, and other gifts items.

Here on this lens I will show the steps take in the creation of my miniature art.

A step by step for my little miniature "Houdini The Mouse"

This is the approximate size of the ACEOs (miniature paintings)

Here I have inked in the painting using a very fine technical pen and sepia colored ink.

Here I have added an ink wash in the background.

I begin to add layer after layer of PrismaColor colord pencil. Filling in... strengthening the lights and darks, then I add fine detail.

So, what the heck are ACEOs? Read on....

ACEOs - A Flourishing Art Form Born on eBay by Nino, eBay Staff Member

Inspired by the familiar baseball card format with sports collectibles, but in 2004, a new art form was born on eBay. A group of innovative artists created a variation of the traditional baseball card format called the Art Cards Editions and Original, or ACEOs for short. Almost two years later, ACEOs are flourishing. More and more people are collecting ACEOs; art supply stores are beginning to stock specialized materials that help artists create them. Perhaps most significantly, art critics are beginning to take notice of these small yet exquisite works of art

Here I have inked in the painting using a very fine technical pen with sepia colored ink and added an India ink wash in the background.

Then I begin to add layer after layer of colored pencil.

More layers of PrismaColor colord pencil. Filling in... strengthening the lights and darks, then I add fine detail. At the very final stage I add a few touches of white acrylic and carefully scratch through the pencil in places.

This is how I finish up my miniature painting

When I have finished the little ACEO and photographed it, watermarked it (I do that with a computer program) listed it on eBay and blogged about it, I then polish it off and protect it.

I carefully paint the edges of the 100% Cotton Illustration Board. Then I write the title, date, my signiture, and the sequential number using India ink on the back of the little painting.

Finally the little piece is slipped into a protective sleeve and is ready to ship to it's new owner.

This is where I create! My "Studio"

I thought it might be interesting for you to see where I spend most of my day...

Because I paint miniature art, (ACEOs) I have a very small work area and I multi-task with computer work.

This is my work station, where I spend ALLOT of my day! :)
