How To Make Polymer Clay Ladybug Beads

Ranked #7,689 in Arts & Design, #126,893 overall | Donates to Humane Society of the United States

Ladybugs are cute and in some countries they are considered good luck. These ladybug beads are easy to make. I've included step by step instructions with photos. They can be strung on wire or cord for a necklace.

Supplies You Will Need

Red Polymer Clay
Black Polymer Clay
Needle
Knife
Baking Tray
Glaze/Varnish (optional)

Step 1

Roll a ball of red clay, approx. 1" in diameter.

Step 2

Roll the ball between your fingers until you have an oval shape, but don't flatten.

Step 3

Take your knife and make a line down the middle of the ladybug.

Step 4

Roll a thin rope of black clay. Then us a knife to cut off small pieces.

Step 5

Roll the black clay into a ball and place onto the back of the ladybug. Slightly flatten the dots. I usually place three or four dots on each side of the line.

Step 6

Take a piece of black clay and flatten between your fingers. Shape into a thin piece, just wide enough to fit across the front of the ladybug.

Step 7

To make the antena, roll two pieces of thin black clay, approx. 1/4 of an inch long. Place it flat on top of the ladybug's head and curl the top part outward.

Step 8

Now you are ready to make the hole. Take your needle (make sure it's fairly thick) and push it gently through the side of the bead. Don't go all the way through because this can cause the bead to lose it's shape. Do the same on the other side, then push the needle all the way through.

Bead Hole

The size of the hole will depend on the width of the wire/rope that you intend to use for stringing. Try different size needles and see what you like best.

Step 9

You are finished making your bead, now all that's left to do is the baking. Place your bead(s) on a cookie sheet and follow the baking instructions on your clay package. Each brand of clay, Sculpey, Fimo etc. will be different. Remember to have a well ventilated room when baking.
