Flower Painting Techniques
Choosing a Background Color For Your Flower Painting
If you are painting a light flower, then choose a dark background.
If you are painting a dark flower, then choose a light background.
This does not mean you have to paint the most extreme in values.
A great way to find the correct value for your flower painting background is to create backdrops and keep them in your studio.
Create a dark background, a light and one of medium value.
Then set up your flower arrangement in front of the various backdrops until you find one you are happy with.
How To Paint a Rose in Watercolor Step by Step
The Star of this painting and Demonstration will be the Rose painting "Open Arms".It is a beautiful climbing rose, which I bought new this year for my garden and I was lucky to see a lot of blooms.
I love the colors in this rose and I am looking forward to painting this rose.
Since I need time for doing a rose painting, I cannot paint from life, no rose would live such a long time.
Another reason is that I have two small kids, so I usually only have time to paint in the evening when they are sleeping - so I work from photos. Since this rose is in my own garden, I had enough time to really observe it and understand more about the colors.
I work only from my own reference photos.
I used a digital camera, Olympus C -750 Ultra Zoom to take the photos in this demo. It's a great camera. I am able to see the details on the wings of a bee. I can zoom up to 40 times.....

Paint a Watercolour Flower with Robbie Laird
Learn to paint florals using wonderful new watercolor techniques from nationally known artist Robbie Laird. This art instruction video contains watercolor instruction that will make beginning watercolor painters take new steps in mastering the art. You'll learn more each time you watch these watercolor lessons.
Flowing Florals: The Informed, Intuitive Approach
Robbie gets you started with color basics (color theory, organization of pigments, logical palette, and mixing technique), then uses a line drawing from her sketchbook and a few photos for color reference. She shows you how to double-load your brush for smooth blending, and how to create the exciting, fluid look of wet-into-wet, while emphasizing the richness of saturated color. She demonstrates how to manipulate edge quality, enhance colors, lift areas, scrape lines, and create seamless transitions. Robbie uses Caran D'Ache (water-soluble pastel crayons) to add gesture and accent color to the painting. It's fun, fluid and fast!
