Everybody is Playing Loud. You Can't Compete Just By Playing Louder!
In most every other style of music, guitar is used to fill in the space between beats and accentuate different parts of a song, but in Metal, you must become one single unit with the drums and bass. This gives you a unified assault that is like a huge battering ram, forcing your point.Yes, everyone wants to play those amazing solos, but if you do that through the whole song, it losses its impact, and it becomes annoying really fast. It is better to think of guitar solos in metal as your secret weapon that you only unleash at the right time to totally blow everyone away. When you can do this right, you will be a master of your craft.

Letting Loose - How To Play Metal Guitar
When the time is right, you do want to let loose with an earth shattering solo...
So what do you do when the time comes to unleash that powerful solo? Well, here is my advice: Don't over think it. Play what comes to you and play how you FEEL.Some people sweat it when it comes to playing a solo, thinking that they must achieve technical excellence and pack as many notes into a few seconds as they possibly can. This is totally untrue.
You will find that people truly appreciate you playing with feeling. If this involves playing a lot of notes really fast to convey the feeling of the song, so be it. Just don't stress it so much. You will find that your hands will almost instinctively know what to do on their own.

Having The Most Sonic Impact Playing Metal Guitar
Can volume changes effect how I play Metal guitar?
Heck yes! The best example that I know of is "Battery" by Metallica. It starts out with a beautiful but low volume intro, then it tears your head up with a unified blast at the highest volume imaginable!Always playing at the same volume becomes boring. Everyone likes it loud, but playing loud at all times gives you no room for the sense of drama that great Metal songs have.
