Is the Holy Rosary A Prayer You Pray?

From the lens How To Pray The Rosary.

As a non-Catholic I wasn't taught to pray the Rosary, but all my friends and a few cousins were, so I am very familiar with the prayer. You've given me a greater understanding with this fine purple star award-winning lens.

My partner was raised Catholic, and two of my daughters have chosen Catholicism as their religion because they married a Catholic. Even so, I was not aware of exactly what "praying the rosary" meant. Thank you for this enlightening lens and God Bless your late mother and father for raising such a kind, caring son.

I'm not Roman Catholic, but have always wondered how one prayed the Rosary, especially as two of my Protestant siblings married Catholics and so did my daughter. Thank you for clarifying this mystery for me.

I was just trying to explain how a rosary works to my daughters (we are not Catholic). Thanks for the facebook reminder about your informative lens.
  • poddys Jan 18, 2012 @ 2:02 pm | delete
Thanks for the information Paul. I was married to a Catholic but never really understood the Rosary. It's still a bit of a mystery to me, but I guess it helps serve as comfort for those who believe in the power of prayer. Nicely done, blessed.

I am Christian but not Catholic. I knew Catholics pray the rosary and have often found them so beautiful and intriguing. Thank you for explaining this to me. I'll find them even more beautiful from now on. Wondering why Protestants and Catholics warred so much... I'm tempted to get my own rosary. Is that wrong?
  • lestroischenes Jan 18, 2012 @ 2:19 am | delete
I enjoyed this so much, Paul. I'm afraid I'm not a believer, but I do love the power and poetry of the words of the Christian and spritual world. Through studying the History of Art, I've learned much about the Christian faith, and in daily life and reading, I've come across snatches of these prayers, but I've never seen them all together. Despite my dismal lack of grace, I find these prayers very soothing and peaceful and am reminded of that beautiful hymn that ends: "Give us your peace, Lord, at the end of the day". Thank you.

Thank you for sharing how to pray the Rosary. I was not raised Catholic so it's always been a bit of a mystery to me. Understanding helps bridge the Protestant-Catholic divide - and that's a good thing! Blessed

I went to a Roman Catholic primary and remember learning to pray the Rosary. I also remember being fascinated with my mother's Rosary as a child. I don't pray the Rosary now but I do have a great love and respect for Mother Mary - I keep a statue of her over my daughter's bed and ask her to watch over her each night. Beautiful lens, blessed :)

The Rosary is a hugely important prayer, and my prayer beads have morphed with my own additions that make it more my own. Nice page! Happy New Year 2012. May Our Lady bless your year!

This is informative. It has been a year since my mother-in-law passed away but my husband has her Rosary next to his side of the bed. We are not Catholic so other than a piece of a memory, it had no meaning. This makes it even more special so thank you. Angel blessed.

At one time in my life I used to pray the Rosary. It came on a television station late at night. I used to stay up and pray with that tv show and then go to bed. I use a different kind of prayer now, but that was wonderful for adding structure and discipline that I needed at that time. It is a very powerful prayer method!

What a lovely dedication to your mother. I will admit that I didn't even know what praying over the rosary was until I read your article. Since I live in Italy, I should find out if it is a common practice here as well.
  • Othercat Dec 30, 2011 @ 6:14 am | delete
This is a first for me. I've never known what was said when someone was praying over their rosary. I never even knew there was an order to it. I always thought they just said a random prayer for each bead. I'm sure your Mother is proud of this lens.

Paul - Very beautifully done! I remember the rosary beads I had when I was younger. They were from my mother who also taught me how to pray and oversaw our spiritual education.

I don't know why but I didn't realize that the Apostle's Creed was one of the Prayers for the Rosary. This is such a beautiful lens and informative, too.

This is a beautiful, well-informative lens, Paul. I went to Catholic school so I had to pray the rosary during school retreat, but I didn't understand the meaning behind it. Now I know. Thank you for sharing =)

As a teen I went to a Catholic girls school, yet I was not Catholic. I always wondered about the Rosary beads and in all my time going there I never asked. Thanks for explaining the steps in a way that makes me understand 30+ years later.

Thank you for making this lens, pkmcr. I was thinking about how one was needed. You have done a beautiful job! It's one of my favourite prayers, too. My family also prayed it together, and it was the prayer we said around my father's deathbed.

I stopped by because I was curious to know what rosary beads are all about. My curiosity is now satisfied.

Thank you for a very informative lens.

Cartesian but Catholic. Not practising and don't believe but touched by this culture; which is also mine. Really touched by this page. What else can I say except that you created something that speaks by itself?
    Blessed by a SquidAngel.

My view of life is probably more Humanist than anything, but I do believe that more than 2000 years ago there was a man called Jesus and whatever his origins, he had a very positive impact with his view of life and how we should treat our fellow man.. My father does not believe in God, but is probably one of the most Christian people I know, in how he treats everyone and how he will always help anyone he can.

This is a beautiful lens Paul - SquidAngel Blessings for you.

My folk were free spirited hippies that didn't believe in indoctrinating children with religion...they taught us kids to research & explore all options in religion, politics, ect...& then make informed choices... But, I also come from an Irish/French Catholic family...and I spent a lot of time with my Grandma as a child, she would secretly bring me to church & Sunday school & gave me the most beautiful ebony & pearl rosary...in exchange for me not tattling about our church trips...lol...

I have found memories of learning & praying the rosary with my grandmother...it was like our special secret thing lol...Of course being my parent's child, I grew up to study & explore all religions & belief systems & form my own ideas about spirituality...but I still think rosaries are really cool! Excellent lens & Blessed by a non-denominational Angel!

Paul, this is a wonderful tribute to your Mother. I so love praying the Rosary even though I don't attend Mass anymore. Since I'm not allowed to receive the Sacraments any longer, attending Mass just breaks my heart. I don't doubt for one minute that our Holy Mother stopped listening to my prayers and praying for me so I continue to recite the Rosary with humility and a loving heart.

Blessed by another Angel today and also lensrolling to my Scarlet Widow lens.

Thank you so much Bev for sharing with us. I know that The Mother of God is close to all of us and I often reflect on the words of the Memorare (Remember O Most Loving Virgin Mary...) and know that she is near to us

Paul, this is beautiful! After all these years and with many Catholic friends, I have never known exactly what the rosary was. As a Presbyterian, of course, I know most of the prayers already. Thank you for explaining this so well.

I was raised Unitarian Universalist, which more than anything means i have a respect for all religions.

Lately, we go to visit a very Holy place called Mount Saint Mary's in Emmittsburg Maryland. It is called the American Lourdes. Miracles happen there frequently.

A beautiful and HUGE statue of Mary greets so called Pilgrims first coming into this Holy spot. There are many beautiful statues of the Blessed Mother as well as many other statues of saints of the Roman Catholic Church there, plus 2 chapels to pray in and a wonderful array of nature spirits everywhere there to sooth the spirit.

So I now have a Mary statue in my house AND a Rosary which I had no idea how to use.

So I thank you for the lesson--I did ask the Universe and here is the answer!!
