Everything (well, most) you need to know to prevent morning sickness!

Let me give you a few pointers to prevent morning sickness alright? It's undeniable. If you're pregnant, be it your first time or (congrats strong woman!) 4th time, you will definitely suffer from morning sickness!

There's no running away or wishing it away. It comes naturally with pregnancy due to the hormonal and chemical changes happening inside your body. As hard to believe as it might seem, there are several ways I've found on how to prevent morning sickness and even, make the symptoms and effects go away!

First up, what causes morning sickness and its effects.

In other words, why does it feel so bad to have something good?

In order to know how to prevent morning sickness, we have to know why morning sickness happens. Pregnancy-related nausea varies from person to person, and many women find they have specific triggers. For some it's a smell, for others a taste; for still others it's something unrelated to the senses, such as not getting enough sleep. Pregnancy is far more than growing a baby. Pregnancy has a huge emotional, mental, spiritual, and energetic side to it.

Nausea and vomiting are common during the first part of pregnancy and are caused by a number of factors. The most popular theory about morning sickness is that it's due to elevated hormones, primarily human chorionic gonadotropin and estrogen. Nausea can happen immediately or you may get lucky and have no morning sickness at all (well tough luck with that, 90% of pregnancies come with morning sickness!).

In short, the causes are different for every single woman but all causes are usually related to a pregnant woman's sense of smell, diet, lifestyle and energy level. If left unchecked, morning sickness can have a debilitating effect on you as the constant vomiting and sickness will definitely rob you of your energy, appetite and these two combined will lead to exhaustion, a real risk factor for miscarriage. Important tips on how to prevent morning sickness!

These are a few but effective tips which I've picked up and have been recommended with. Most of them however, I've gotten them from this highly helpful ebook, Morning Sickness Freedom. There are tons more remedies and treatments in there which actually work!
  • You can have any type of drink as long as its water :p. Your body needs all the water it can get so give it a helping hand by staying away from fizzy drinks, tea, coffee, alcohol, you get the idea.
  • Smoking contributes to nausea and vomiting as well as poisoning the baby.If you are the type who likes smoking, well abstaining for 9 months or even giving it up for your baby is worth it right?
  • Stay away from them smelly smells and odors!Pregnant women develop an enhanced sensitivity to odors and certain smells make them most sick. For some women it may be a background feeling of sickness that is hardly noticeable but for some, it may lead to overwhelming nausea and violent vomiting leading to dehydration.
  • How to prevent morning sickness you ask? Ginger! This is perhaps the single most important magic bullet in preventing morning sickness. Helping to stave off nausea, you can have it in cookies or tea . Ginger is also a good source of the mineral manganese. You can never have enough ginger!
  • When you wake up, your sugar level is extremely low. This does contribute in some way to morning sickness. To counteract this, consume carbs in the morning. A few carbs I would recommend are dry crackers, fruits, bread and baked potatoes.
  • When it comes to food, consume meals in small quantities and frequently to prevent heartburn and nausea. Stay away from greasy, oily and fatty food as they cause your stomach to have an acid reflux, something really nasty which you don't want to have.
  • Stay put and avoid traveling especially long distances. Sure, you have a life to attend to but do remember that you have a life to take care too =)
  • Also, avoid going into warm places like the kitchen. For the next 9 months, your husband can cook and do house chores while you hog the tv and couch (about time he did something lol!)

Is that all there is to prevent morning sickness?

Happily to say...

Nope! That's the best part because every woman is different (yes we are!) and every woman's body is different so what works for Lucy may not work for Jane, no? That being said, is there really an exact guide on how to prevent morning sickness?

While I'm sure that there is no one and absolute method or recipe, I've recently started using a few tips from Morning Sickness Freedom, an ebook a friend recommended to me during my 6th month.

I admit that I haven't been using all the tips from the book since I'm still working (yeah, so much for a 9 month break!) but I'm really glad and satisfied that so far the remedies recommended in the book have worked wonders! I've not felt myself going green, teary eyed and funny in the stomach since my 6th month!

I don't know about you but thanks to Morning Sickness Freedom, I can do everything a normal woman can even though I'm in my 8th month now! From doing groceries and having tea with friends to driving around town and romantic dinners with my adorable husband, I am really enjoying my pregnancy =)
