When A Lens Has Lost Momentum, Don't Abandon it, Recycle it.

This lens shows you how to bring a lens, that has lost momentum and interest, back to life. You can simply recycle it. Improve Lens Rank, spark new interest, and I have heard this will also improve your overall Lens Rank (the average of all your lenses). One of the best kind of lenses this works with is event or seasonal lenses. This lens will explore a few ideas to help you plan for recycling when you are creating an event or seasonal lens.

One Thing Always Stays The Same

The URL

Planning A Great URL for a Recycling Lens

The URL is the web address for your lens. It usually begins with http://www.squidoo.com/
and then you would add to that to personalize YourPageURL

When you are choosing a URL for a Christmas lens, for example, you can be very

generic specific.

so that your Christmas lens can later transform and evolve into a New Years lens, than later into a Valentines lens.

Before I get too far ahead of myself. I want to explain what I mean by the term,

generic specific.

For the lens I discribed above (Christmas, New Years, Valentines Day), an example of a generic specific URL might be;
* GIFTS
Where the lens would start out being about Christmas GIFTS and later evolve into New Years Gifts, than later into Valentines Gifts.

Another example would be;
* DECORATIONS
Your lens would begin as a lens all about Christmas Decorations, evolve into New Years Decorations, and then later into Valentines Decorations.

Still another example;
* Party Planning
or
* Weddings
or
* BIRTHDAYS
or
* GAMES

In other words, you would choose a URL that is specific to what your lens is about but generic enough to evolve over time to be effective throughout the year for many seasonal and event lens topics.

Why RECYCLE A Lens?

One of the main reasons I started recycling lenses was because I saw them lose interest. And I realized that I could save a lot of time in building a lens if I didn't need to load all the modules again.

This works great if the recyling lens is going to be similar in layout as the one previously on that page.

This works great if the plan is in place ahead of time and the lens actually 'evolves' more than really going through a major transformation overnight.

So the major reason Why to recycle is to save time.

Another great reason is that Overall (average) Lens Rank.
That may play a part in technical things but from my point of view it simply dosn't feel good to see an average gradually falling when there is something I can do about it.

Why not just delete the one that is falling out and start over?
Again it is a matter of time. If starting over works better for you, than, maybe that is the way to go. But, how will you really know until you try it.

What about Giant Squids? They get a template right?
Well yes. When I first became a Giant Squid I was allowed one template. I used it one time. I found that I have about 6 different kinds of lenses and they are set up differently. So the template hasn't been helpful.

OK, but, A Giant Squid can make more than one template now right?

That is true. When I found out that I could make more than one template I tried it out. Then, when I started to make a new lens, only one template was available. This may be a great idea (if I knew how to access the other templates), but, there are still times when recycling is a better option than building a new lens.

Recycling has been extremely helpful as I can look at what is already published a few times and plan the evolution process so I will have a new lens in no time. While still preserving the best of the previous lens.

Which is another reason that recycling is better than starting from scratch or using a template (remember a template will not save any content within the modules).

When you recycle, you do get to keep content that you like to have on several lenses. You get to keep your recommendations (your lensrolls), you get to keep any content you want, and only change the content you want to change to better serve the changing theme.

Back to the concept of Christmas to New Years to Valentines Day...

Think of your lens like a brick and mortar shop. They do not change the address or the name of the shop several times a year. They simply change the contents of the store to meet the events and seasons throughout the year.

They have planned a name and address (location) that will evolve throughout the year. That is what Recycling a Lens is really all about. Creating a lens that will evolve through time regardless of the seasons or changing events.

Remember... Your lens will be going back to Christmas again after it evolves through the seasons... so you will also have the potential of returning visitors who favorited your Christmas Lens. They may have watched the evolution as well and have already decided you are the expert on

Blog Changes

Give Your Changes Some PR

Once You Have Attracted Your Visitors - Keep Them Coming Back

Your page gets X number of visitors and you start to notice a few less from one week to the next. How can you bring your visitors back again and again?

Blog your changes. Tweet your updates. Squid Cast to your fans. Get the word out that you have made changes.

The real trick to this working well is to make great changes so that when you tweet them, blog them, tweet them, or send out a squid cast, your fans and followers know that they really need to make another visit to your page.

This is done by having significant changes apparent each time you call attention to the lens. In other words... don't tweet a dozen updates on the same lens when most of the changes have been editing or things that are needed to improve the lens without actually adding value to the reader's experience.

It would be better to blog about these kind of updates and tweet or squidcast when new value is added and a repeat visit would be worth the time your reader is giving to you.

Just a few more ideas to think about.

Other Recycling Topics - Events - Sports - In The News

One idea that comes to mind is a Sports lens. You may have a favorite Baseball Team, and a Football Team and these are most active at different times of the year.

So rather than select a URL football or baseball why not choose a generic specific like Sports News or even more specific Game Scores or Sports Gear.

Think of your lens as an expert on Sports News and Gear for example and you can evolve the lens throughout the year from everything between Pro Golf to NFL or TBall.

You can allow the lens to evolve between different seasons and only remove outdated content after the season is well past by. Some folks will want to read about last months scores and maybe even two months ago, but past that time it is long overdue news.

News on any topic can also be a candidate for recycling. For example: The Political Landscape is ever changing. A lens about the Elections for President are going to go dormant for 4 years ... why not create a political lens that will evolve around different stages of a specific area of politics. Using President rather than Elections, or even Leaders rather than a particular office.

Case Study - Specific Lens Recycled

The first lens I recall recycling can be seen
HERE

You Can Tell by the URL That I Didn't Plan That One

The lens began as a Comic Con News lens. I was so excited about Comic Con I built a lens about it. Honestly I really just wanted a place to keep up with everything about Comic Con myself and I knew that I would be working most of the time and the internet was going to be my best source of information. Yet, I didn't want to have to go all over the internet to find everything. So I built the lens with feeds and auto updates from all of the sites and resources I could find.

About two weeks after Comic Con was over, the traffic began to slow down a lot. I decided to look at ways to make it appealing beyond the Convention news. So I came up with the idea to highlight the costumes. That idea evolved into the posters of the comic inspired costumes and then as Halloween approaches I started finding Lenses about costumes.

Now it is a mix of inspirations for Halloween.
Sometime in December I will move some things around and make it a New Years Eve Costume Lens. Many of the featured lenses will still fit... and I am sure I can find several more to add when the time comes.

Next year, when it is time for the Comic Convention again, all I will need to do is add the feeds again and find some current news about dates and locations for the convention.

In the mean time...
I can use the themes of comics, costumes, and animation topics in a variety of seasonal and event timelines.

And the best news is,
My traffic continues to gain momentum even with the odd URL /comic-con which you wouldn't think I would get so much google traffic with requests for costumes even with no mention of costumes or halloween in the URL.

    Nice lens, I had actually made a couple lenses with this in mind recently - one of the latest being a lens on unique tea blends so right now the content is all about the holidays. Once they are over I can switch over to other tea blends - hopefully it will work out.. going a little slow so far I guess not many people search for holiday tea blends. =)

    Very helpful! I am going to experiment with this a bit! I have had some success just updating titles, but seasonal specific makes sense! Thank you!

    Hello CleanerLife, Thank you for visiting my lens. I like what you said "..it does seem better to retool low traffic Lenses. Also sounds good to make seasonal Lenses flexible for year round use." That is how this started for me. I have another one to work on soon that I made for Father's day and I want to create a Just for Dad holiday lens from it. (The recommendations will stay the same because Dad Loves the same kind of gifts all year round generally) I'll just find some newer releases of some things. Thanks again for dropping by. I'd love to see the lens you are going to try this idea out with. Post your link here.

    Hello jewelsofawe, Great points you made especially "...I added tags and have changed the name and/or added content and had the lens improve in rank by quite a bit" I didn't mention tags in the lens (or if I did it wasn't enough empasis on it). Tags do need to be changed (or at least reviewed for pertainence). :D Thanks for the lensroll :D
