How To Tell If A Mole Is Dangerous Before Removal

Cancerous MoleMost moles are harmless yet some can be precancerous and can become dangerous if ignored. There is only one definitive way to diagnose a suspicious mole and that is through a medical doctor who will likely take a sample of the mole and send it to a lab for analysis.

Although this sounds intimidating, most moles are completely harmless. The only type of growth that can turn dangerous are referred to as dysplastic nevi, and these growths are more common in individuals with a family history of skin cancer.

Here are some things to look for if you have a suspicious mole, and remember, never guess with your health, always have your doctor look at any suspicious growth on your skin.

Signs that may indicate a cancerous mole:

  • Its shape and color are inconsistent
  • It bleeds or looks inflamed without a known cause
  • It is painful or itchy
  • It has changed in color or size
If any of these signs are present, then put your mind at ease and schedule a visit with your doctor to evaluate the mole.

Electrosurgery (a.k.a. electrocautery) is a surgical method that can be used to remove a skin mole. With this surgery an instrument is heated by way of an electric current and applied to the mole. The mole is burned and then removed by the doctor. The mole is then sent to a lab for analysis. This is generally performed using an local anesthetic to numb the area.

The procedure can cause discomfort or pain and the resulting wound is bandaged to avoid an infection. Healing time can be lengthy but this will depend on the healing abilities of the individual. This is a quick method of removal but some degree of scarring is expected.

A skin mole will grow when exposed to direct or indirect sunlight so after removal or to prevent a mole from growing larger, the following precautions should be taken:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Most people consider the sun's rays to be harmful only in the summertime; however, being outdoors in the winter can be just as damaging. Snow on the ground can reflect the sun's harmful rays causing more damage.

  • Tanning booths produce Ultraviolet A rays and while these types of rays may take longer to do damage then the Ultraviolet B rays of sunlight, they are nonetheless harmful.

  • Be liberal with your use of sunscreen and use a minimum of 30 SPF. Even sunscreens designed for sports and water will wash off so reapply often. A general rule of thumb is to reapply sunscreen every hour if you are in water or working out and sweating outdoors.
