Discovering RSS

I have heard the jargon: RSS, RSS news, RSS feeds, news feeds, mentioned for some time now, however for whatever reason I have always chosen to hide from investigating further.

After finally taking the time to look into what all the fuss was about, I was amazed at just how quick and easy it was to use.

Honestly, you will be surprised how really easy it is to use and how useful it is!
It adds some great up-to-date news and content for your readers to read!
And it gives your readers an extra reason to come back!

Why Do I Want An RSS News Feed?

- An RSS Feed can be added to your web page in a matter of seconds.
- Once added you do not have to do anything more.
- Once added, an RSS feed displays up-to-date news headlines and articles on your web page regularly, this can be on a daily basis or on an occasional basis (it depends on the rss feed you choose to use).

How do I create an RSS feed on Squidoo?

- Create a squidoo web page (lens) - if you haven't already.
- Edit the lens (login and then go to your dashboard and click edit).
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the 'add modules' button.
- Click the 'Add Unique Content' tab.
- Find the module named 'RSS: Add Your Own Feed' (click the 'next' button if it is not on the current page).
- Once found, click the 'add' link located next to the module named 'RSS: Add Your Own Feed' (repeat clicking the add link if you require more than one rss feed).
- Click the 'Save' button

You should now have a rss feed module on your 'Edit Lens' mode page titled 'RSS: Add Your Own Feed: New RSS: Add Your Own Feed'.

- Click 'EDIT' on the module titled: 'RSS: Add Your Own Feed: New RSS: Add Your Own Feed'
- Give your module a title and subtitle.
- In the box titled 'What URL would you like to pull RSS from?' you need to place the link of the rss feed you would like to use (see section below: 'how do I find and identify an rss link' for more information about this).
- In the box titled 'How many headlines would you like to show?' enter a number - this number represents how many news/article headlines will be displayed on your page.
- The 'Would you like to include an excerpt from each link in the feed??' represents whether you would like to display an introduction to each news/article headline.
- The 'How frequently should the module be updated?' represents how often you would you like your page to check if the rss news feed has been updated e.g. check if there is a new news headline or a new article.

How do I find and identify an RSS link?

RSS feed links can be found on many websites, they usually are identified by a small orange image titled 'rss' or 'xml' or a broadcast image. The image can be on the web page or located on the right hand side of the website address (e.g. www.)
Examples of which can be seen on the following pages:
Medical RSS News Feed Links
What Car? RSS Feed Links

Once you have found one of these images or an RSS link on your chosen subject, click on it. This should take you to a page that looks similar to the following examples:
Medical RSS News - This is the type of RSS Feed link that you need to copy
What Car? This is the type of RSS Feed link that you need to copy
- Once you have found a page like the examples above on your chosen subject; Copy the link from this type of page (this is the link that you must paste into the squidoo box titled 'What URL would you like to pull RSS from?').

WHERE CAN I FIND AN RSS LINK ON MY SUBJECT?
- There are now rss directories springing up that you can search for rss feeds on your chosen subject
- You can search for rss on your subject in the search engines such as Google.
- You can search for rss on your subject in squidoo e.g. searching for 'medical rss news' in squidoo will bring up the following page of rss feeds:
Useful Medical and Health RSS News Feeds
