Save Money When Food Shopping 

Grocery Shopping the Smart Way

One of the best ways to cut down on your grocery bill is to go to the grocery store less often. Make a large shopping trip every two or three weeks, instead of every week. This is because a certain amount of your grocery bill each week is made up of impulse items. If every visit to the grocery store results in $10 in impulse items, reducing your visits will save you money.

Stay focused on your grocery list. Check the weekly flyer for your store, check your fridge and pantry, make your list, and stick with it!

Buy generic or store brands In my house, we can not tell the difference between one brand of peanut butter, ketchup, mustard, relish, etc and another.

Eat before you shop and leave the kids at home. Doing both will save you money by reducing impulse purchases.

Use coupons. Make a game out of it for the kids every Sunday.

Shop On-Line for Bulk Items 

If you have the space, comparing prices and shopping on-line makes sense for bulk items makes sense.

Tilia Bags & Rolls

Tilia Containers 

I have a few of these containers and they're great for dry items like flour, cereal, crackers, chips, etc. Keep everything fresh and eliminates pantry pests. I hate having to throw away food that has meal worms or moths in it. And these containers keep food fresh for a longer period of time. Cookies, chips, crackers will all stay crisp and fresh in these containers.

Drive Smart

Make sure your tires are inflated correctly. Soft tires can contribute to increased gas use.

Turn off the air conditioner. This may not be practical in some locales, but it will save you money if you can do it. Consider, instead, turning off your air conditioner 5 or 10 minutes before you reach your location.

Reduce the weight of the car. Take the stroller, cooler, and whatever else you don't need for the day out of your trunk.

Slow down. Driving the speed limit or below (within practical limits) can increase your fuel effiency.

Take the ski, bike, or luggage rack off your car to reduce wind resistance.

Combine trips. Group your errands into groups so that you can complete all errands within a certain geographic area.

Do you really need all those t.v. stations? How many do you watch? And if you didn't have them . . . ? Perhaps you'd read or interact with your family more! Cable t.v. is so expensive. Consider going down a tier to two, or doing without it completely.

There are times, certainly, when a dryer is necessary. But most of the time you can save money by drying your clothes outside. And the smell is so great! As an added benefit, hanging your clothes will result in less wear and tear on them, so you'll save money on replacement clothing, too.

Clean out your Closets 

Go through your closets and bring your outgrown and no-longer-worn clothing to a second-hand store. Make it fun for the kids and tell them that they can have the money from the clothes!

Check with your local second-hand store to see their requirements. Some will only take clothes in-season, some have a limit on how many items you can bring in at one time, or only have 1 or 2 days a week in which they accept clothing.
