Work From Home By Starting A Daycare

by Blake Allen

There are many people who would like to start their own day care program but are unsure how. The majority of those who want to start a day care service are young mothers who would like to stay with their child or children and those who just love being around children in general. There are few others that believe that starting a day care center is a really good investment. Whatever the reason for wanting to start a day care, here are some very good tips to help you on your way.

First, before you do anything else, you need to create a business plan. This involves deciding how many kids you would like to keep, where you would like your facility to be and how many people you would like to have on your staff. Also, ask yourself, what will make my day care stand out from the rest? You need to make up policies involving prices and services provided. At first your plan may just be rough estimates and ideas, this is fine, you can polish it up later.

Second, unless you are rich enough not to worry about the money, you should look into what kind of financial backing you can get. Those that you are asking for financial backing are going to want to see your business plan and if they like it you may just have an investor. Some organizations, like religious groups, would choose a plan that had a religious curriculum included in the business plan over one that did not.

Third, you will want to get all the proper licensing, insurance and make sure you have the proper training. In most states it is required that day care owners and workers have training in first aid and CPR for babies and older children. The type of insurance you get will depend on where the day care is located and how many children there will be. Licenses depend on state and will likely need the same information as the insurance agency.

Fourth, you will need to choose a location for your daycare. Location is very important to any business. You will need a building big enough for a play area, a rest area and an eating area. You will also want to have enough room outside to have a fenced in play area. You will need a safe but well traveled area to attracted and reassure customers. An area that is already zoned right for your day care business will also be good to have.

Fifth, you will need plenty of age appropriate furniture, toys, and other supplies. If you are going to be caring for infants you will want things like cribs or playpens and walkers and saucers. For older children you will need plenty of toys and crayons and coloring books for them to entertain themselves with. You will also need things like kitchen supplies, bathroom supplies, cleaning supplies and other things of the such.

In conclusion, starting a day care center is a lot of work. You should make sure you have thought everything through before getting financial help and things of the such. The tips above are just a few of the many tips available for those who want to start a day care center.

Effectively Managing Your Home Based Daycare Business

by Fiona Lohrenz

Opening a daycare business is a lot of work, make no bones about it. The list of things to do will seem overwhelming and unending. While creating a business plan, designing an area for your home based daycare business, and obtaining clients is important in the initial opening of the business, it is equally important to manage your business appropriately once the business has started. Here are some tips how you can lay the groundwork now for the effective management of your day care business once you are up and running.

When you initially started your daycare business, you designated an area where the children would be watched over, where games and activities could take place, where the children could eat, and where the children could rest if they so desired. Did you think to create a specific area where you could work away from it all? In order to manage your home based daycare business, it is important to have a small work area designated specifically for where you can conduct the operations behind the business. This is the area where you should handle any payroll, budgeting, taxes, and so on.

Try to focus on keeping all things business separate from all things personal. If you start mixing up appointments, calendars, tasks, and so on, your business is likely to suffer. You should make sure that the daycare business is a completely different persona from your personal life. This holds true when it comes to emails, telephone lines, and even business supplies. In order to effectively manage your home based daycare business, be sure that business is kept separate in all aspects.

Time management is vital, particularly if your day care is attached to your home. If you are not fastidious about organizing your time you will become disorganized, inefficient and frazzled with little pieces of you spread all over. Timetable your day with core slots of time devoted to the daycare and within those slots schedule specific activities. Assign quieter parts of the day to complete domestic chores enlisting family members to help out. Don't forget to factor in breaks and relaxation time for you too. Childcare is a tiring business and you need to keep fresh and energized.

A disadvantage of working for yourself especially if you are home based is the tendency of friends and family to assume you are always free for visits. They feel that, since you work at home, you have time for their phone calls and visits. This can be detrimental to your time management system thus your business. visits. It is important that you inform these well intentioned people that this is a job. They must understand that you have certain hours each day that are dedicated to work and your family and this time should not be interrupted. Explain that you are a professional and as such need to focus completely on the task at hand during these hours. Then switch on your answering machine!

Approach planning your day with your business head on. You can effectively manage your daycare and family life in tandem, it just takes a bit of thought and a lot of discipline. Policies and procedures take a little bit of work to put in place but once there they make for the smooth running of any business. Ultimately, your success depends on it. Get planning.

Starting a Daycare - 3 Concrete Steps

by Fiona Lohrenz

So, you think you would like to start a day care but don't know where to start? Let us assume you know nothing about the industry except that it involves children. That is pretty much the position I was in when I started my day care 10 years ago and I spent a year and a half researching and learning before I got my first child in the door. Before you go running for the hills in dismay allow me to cut short the research time a little with some pointers on how best to prepare for the exciting adventure that is starting a daycare business.

Your first port of call should be your business plan. Every successful business starts with a well thought out plan thus enabling the entrepreneur (you) to get a clear, overall picture of what your business will entail. Many people get to the business plan stage and no further due to a realization that the project is unfeasible for whatever reason. It's better to find out now than after you have sloughed a lot of time and money into starting a business that's going nowhere or you don't enjoy.

Introduction/description,benefits, market research, key financial details and conclusion. These are the vital elements of starting any business and are covered by your business plan. I found it to be a great checklist of things to do as I worked my way methodically through each of the required steps. Areas I might have omitted or glossed over were covered leaving me with thorough and accurate vision of my business. Like a good teacher it provided the questions and ensured I filled in the blanks. Business plan templates abound but here a few that I quite like.

www.sba.gov USA www.bytestart.co.uk UK www.teagasc.ie/startingyourownbusiness/template.htm Ireland

Talk to the experts next. Call your local licensing representative and have them come to your premises for a meeting. Find out what they will be looking for in terms of premises layout, contents, play area and general health and safety issues. They are the experts and responsible for granting your license so, you want what they want. Have them go through expected policies and procedures and get them to give you guidelines and tips on paperwork. Prepare in advance of this meeting and come armed with a list of comprehensive questions so you do not waste a great opportunity to absorb as much knowledge as possible.

When I was researching my business I received some of the best tips, hints and advice from other providers, in fact, I still make information gathering visits once a year and learn something new every time. Existing daycare owners are an invaluable resource for practical advice. Call up a couple of established providers (preferably not too close to your proposed venture, they might not be too thrilled with impending competition!), explain your situation and set up a day to go visit. People are usually delighted to help aspiring entrepreneurs and love discussing their own business. There is nothing quite like the advice of people who are on the ground, doing the day to day business.

Take a pen and paper for notes, ask questions, listen and observe. Notice daily routines, room layout and equipment, methods for dealing with behaviors, staff and child interaction, health and safety procedures, hygiene practices, peruse paperwork (ask for copies of the paperwork to help guide you when formulating your own). Get tips on advertising, pricing and suppliers. Try to speak with the owner or manager, the staff and the cook and get a feel for each unique role. Ask questions like What do you feel could be improved? or If you were starting out what things would you do differently? These open questions will provide you with an immense wealth of knowledge, all of the practical, hands on variety.

These are just three steps you can take in pursuit of your dream to start a day care business and they will provide you with a tremendous amount of information and guidance. Your confidence in yourself and your ability to achieve your vision will peak and you will be propelled into further positive action. It costs nothing but time and if you can get yourself to this point there is no looking back. What are you waiting for?
