How to start a Virtual Business

Ranked #8,441 in Education, #192,855 overall

Have you been dreaming of starting your own Virtual Business?

Are you ready to take the plunge but don't know where to start? It is so very important to have all your ducks in a row and research every avenue before you begin your venture. Whether you are starting your business as a Virtual Assistant or other virtual professional business, you must know what you are getting into and how to start the process with success. This is not an easy task and some discover quickly that starting a virtual business is much more work than anticipated.

Starting a virtual or work-from-home business is anything but glamorous. But for me the rewards have been priceless.

Here is an insightful look at how I began my Virtual Business and the steps that worked for me. This is the first lens in this series of "How to Start a Virtual Business." This first lens covers the basics of the start-up. My next lenses will cover Marketing, Networking, Internet skills, in-depth research tips and more.

Why I started a Virtual Career

This decision was not an easy one for me. I call it my High heels-to-slippers exchange. Would I do it over again? In a heartbeat!
Virtual Career-How it Changed My Life
If you are thinking about a Virtual Career or a stay at home business you definitely want to do it for the right reasons. Here is a unique, personal story of my decision to improve my family's life.

Identifying A Niche

When planning your Virtual Business start-up it is important to know what niche you are entering into. As you read in the Wikipedia description above, a Virtual Business can be anything that can be done behind the interworking of the internet.

If you have not identified your niche yet, then it is time to do some soul searching and discover what it is that you want to do in life. What interests you the most? What are you really good at? Its amazing the amount of personal satisfaction achieved when you really love your career.

My niche is over a broad spectrum and I offer many services to my clients. This is also a very good thing - the broader your knowledge base and skill set the more you have to offer. The more you have to offer the larger pool of clients that will be in need of your services.

So no matter what your niche or niches are identifying what they are is the first step in your Business Start-up.

Have a Plan

Ok, so you have identified what you want to do. Now what?
In order for your business to start off right you must have a working plan. There are many different personalities in this world. Some who plan everything to the T before they start on any trip, project, life event, etc. Then there are those that fly thru, planning by the seat of their pants and let life take them where it will. I am not one to judge or try to change to anyone's way of thinking. If it works for you then don't change. Your success in this will be achieved by doing it your way. If you are a planner to the 9, great. If you are an act now and fix it as you go personality, that is ok too.

Your planning is up to you - but you have to one to start a business. (If I'm wrong and there is someone out there that started a successful business with no plan then let me know - I would love to hear about it!)

A working plan is one that will change many times over as you progress thru your business building adventures. Mine did. I thought I had it all figured out yet, each time I turned around I was changing gears and pulling in something new. The beauty of starting a business is you will learn something new everyday.

Change from the original plan can be very good so don't be discouraged if your course or expectation falls short at times. My best advise at this stage is a positive attitude and don't give up. Perseverance and patients will become your new best friend!

Research

Yes, you have to do your home-work to work-at-home!

The next and most important basic in starting your Virtual Business is RESEARCH! I cannot stress how vital this is to any new and existing business. Trends and technology change so quickly. What could have been hot and juicy last week is cold and dry this week.

Research Tip #1:
Start your research by your product(s) or service(s). Remember, your Niche? Who else is doing it and how? Are they effective? Can you do it better? Of course you can! By researching how and creating a plan of action.

Research Tip #2:
How is your product or service received by the population? Is it a popular or much needed item? Is it a specialty? The key is to find out who your population is and how best to get the word out.

Research Tip #3:
What do you need to get your business off and running? It is important in your planning to know what resources, technology, money, and time is needed to get your business off the ground and running.

I know this sounds like a lot of work. It is! Before I started my business I spent well over 500 hours researching every resource I could get my hands on. Why? Because I did not want to fail. The success of my business was and is very important to me. The point I am trying to make is in order to start your business you need to be serious! Like anything, when someone really sets there mind to do something they are more than likely to achieve it than not.
