How to Start a Website?

If you want to know how to start a website? then read on and I will guide you through the process.

Don't worry, the days when you had to be a geek with cocacola bottles to know how to put up a website are over...

Yes, it's become much more easier.

If you know how to write text and click with your mouse you have what it takes to start an own website.

If you read on I will show you the steps you must take to create a website from scratch, and if things go well you could even earn some money from it.

First I would really want you take a look at this website creation tool. (opens a new window)

I have never seen anything like it.

Purchase a Domain Name

If you are serious about starting a website, the first thing you should do is to choose a domain name. A name that will represent your website.

You are the boss here. It can be anything between heaven and earth.

Head over to any of the domain name registrars and see if your name is available.

You could also wait with this step because once we head over to find a good hosting service, some of the hosting companies will include a free domain name.

A domain name cost money. You pay a yearly fee of $3-4 to $20 depending on the company you register with.

Down below is a service I use.

Godaddy
Godaddy is one of the big domain name registrars. The price at godaddy is $6.95 for a .com domain for 1 year.

Host Your Website

Next step is to find a place online were you can host your future website.

Imagine the hosting service as an art gallery. Your website is a beautiful painting. If you want people to see your beautiful painting, you must put it in the art gallery.

There are free hosting places but I wouldn't bother any with these. They will fill your site with ads and isin't very reliable.

Remember that hosting is neccessary if you want other people to see the website you create.

Hosting comes in all forms and shapes depending on how many people are visiting your site.

What you want in a hosting service is that it's fast, easy to use and doesn't have much down time. (trouble with their servers).

If you are uncertain about this usually go for the smallest package. You could always upgrade if you need to.

Below is a service that I use.

Hostgator
This is a service I am using right now. It's very fast and I haven't experienced and failures yet. (Almost 8 months)

It costs from $4.95 per month to $12.95

IX Web hosting
This is also one of the large companies. I haven't used this service personally but i have heard much good about it. $3.95 per month.

1&1 Hosting
This company has one of the lowest prices on hosting. $3.99 per month.

Create Your Content

It's not hard these days...

As I said before.. It has become much more easier to create a website. You don't really need to know anything about html or any other coding.

All you need to know is how to write text and how to use your mouse.

Well, that's not going to make me a website you might think.

But it can!

Nowdays there is something called a WYSIWYG editor (what you see is what you get).

With this you only need to put the text were you want it, add some pictures and even some video clips. It's very easy.

There are a couple of these WYSIWYG editors out there. Some are free and some cost you money.

The free ones usually charge money when you want to put up your website so others can see it. (More on that later).

I have collected some of these programs below and which I think is the best ones.

WYSIWYG Editors

OK I have made a small list of the programs that i use and that I think are the best.

NVU
This program is free. It's very easy to use with it's drag and drop functionality. (WYSIWYG)

NVU is a very good program and I have used it many times.

BlueVoda
This program is also free to use. It has a WYSIWYG editor as well and very easy to use.

A disadvantage is that you have to pay for the hosting at bluevoda if you want other people to be able to view your site.

Some paid programs...

Xsite Pro
This is a program that I have used many times. You can create websites very quick with this one. It also allows you to make money on the sites you create.

It's a very cool program but it cost money.

Site Rubix
This is a service I am using now. I'm more into making money on the sites I create so this is more targeted on making money.

There is a WYSIWYG editor here as well and this program is very easy to use.

Good thing about this is that I get free hosting with this service. I don't have to pay for that.

There is also a membership to an online university that teaches how to make money online.

This service cost $29.95 per month. A bit salty but I think it's worth it. You could always check it out if you like.

Closing words

I really hope you found some value here.

Remember that it's much better to start small and expand once you get some experience.

Don't go out and buy the most expensive tool and think you will rule the world.

If I were you I would start with the free website creation softwares like NVU. Create some pages for fun and then look for a domain name and a hosting package if I would still be interested.

However if you have some cash I really recommend you to take a look at this sitesell service again.

You can visit their site here.

Take care and I hope you know a little bit more on how to start a website.
