How to Stop a Dog from Biting.  I hear this all the time:  "We've been to obedience training and my dog still bites!  How do I learn how to stop a dog from biting?"

First of all, obedience training is great for you and your dog, but it will never stop behavior problems like dog biting or puppy biting.  If you take a dog that bites to obedience classes, you will then have a dog that Heels, Comes, Lies Down--and bites...

A common misconception is the fallacy that once a dog has bitten someone or drawn blood, he is doomed to continue biting and can never be trusted again.  This is nonsense!  But you'd be amazed at the number of people who believe it--even many so-called "professionals" in the dog field.

There are many causes of dog aggression which result in your needing to learn how to stop a dog from biting and stop puppy biting.

Territorial aggression / food aggression in dogs can cause dogs to bite.  Fear or self-defense can also cause dogs or puppies to bite.  For example, if a family member corners a puppy to grab him to punish him for soiling or chewing, the pup learns to fear being grabbed and begins defending himself.  He learns that biting the grabbing hand makes it go away.

Many forms of aggression can be controlled or eliminated.  It sometimes requires the help of a competent animal behaviorist.  Please do not let anyone use harsh methods to work with your aggressive dog.  I always say, "In dog training, 'jerk' is a noun and not a verb."

If your dog has fear aggression, YOU may actually be causing it!  Do you greet your dog by leaning over him, looking him straight in the eye with your shoulders squared and reach down to pet him on the back of his neck?  I have seen fear aggression disappear when the owners stop inducing and rewarding submission.
