How to Stop Drinking Alcohol On Your Own

Sometimes, it is hard to stop drinking alcohol. Maybe you enjoy the taste of the feeling you get when you drink. Maybe it helps you forget your worries and provides comfort that you have no other means of getting.

Some people are unable to quit drinking without qualified assistance. This is why programs such as AA exist.

There are times when you can actually stop drinking on your own, though. It is a matter of learning to retrain your thinking about alcohol.

Stop drinking alcohol by not buying it

If you frequently stop by the grocery store to buy alcohol on your way home from work, this needs to stop. You may be surprised at what a great impact this one small step has on your drinking. Most people do not want to get back out once they are home - especially to a place like the grocery store.

Keep your mouth busy to stop drinking

Candy, gum, or sunflower seeds are a good way to keep your mouth busy when you get the craving for alcohol. Exchanging one habit for another is a good way to trick your mind. Replace your bar or drink cabinet with one filled with healthy snacks, gum, candy, or nuts.

Exercise to stop drinking

The gym is a great place to avoid drinking. Go for a workout after you are finished with work, or even just go for a brisk walk or run around your neighborhood if you do not like gyms.

Working out is a great way to boost your mood and improve your health at the same time.

Stop drinking by avoiding social drinkers

Many people drink as a social habit. If you have friends like this, don't completely shut them out because you want to avoid going to bars; talk to them on the phone or meet them somewhere you know alcohol will not be a temptation.

If these people are really your friends, they will understand and support you while still maintaining the friendship. Alcohol does not have to be the glue that holds you together.

The process to stop drinking takes time

Do not force yourself to give up drinking overnight if you cannot handle it. For some people, going 'cold turkey' is just a setup for a huge drinking binge.

Remind yourself that this is a process that will take time to cure. You made the choice to start drinking - you can choose to stop, too.

Most importantly, forgive yourself when you have slip-ups. They are inevitable. When you fall off the wagon, just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move on.
