How to Stop My Dogs From Fighting - Stop Fighting Dogs

How to stop my dogs from fighting.   Yes, two dogs fighting in your home can wreak havoc and cause a lot of stress!  The good news is that there are some powerful things you can do to stop your dogs from fighting...

By the way, obedience training will not eliminate behavior problems like fighting and aggression and biting.  Obedience training is great!  But if you take a dog that fights to obedience class, you now have a dog that Sits, Stays, Heels--and fights...

How Do I Choose a Dog That Will Get Along With My Current Dog?

If you're looking for a second dog for your family, keep in mind that the more that two dogs have in common, the more likely it is that the two dogs will fight with each other.  The most important factors in stopping two dogs from fighting are age, sex (and neutering), early social learning, and temperament.  So, for example, sisters would be a volatile mix that may have fights between these two female dogs because they're identical in early social learning, sex, and age.

(See the following section for a method to introduce a second dog to your first one--and also to determine if two dogs will get along well together...)

How Do I Stop My Dogs From Fighting?

Some of the ways to stop your dogs from fighting include:
How you choose and use your dogs' names,
Should you treat your dogs equally? (The answer will probably surprise you!)
How to handle meals to avoid food aggression,
Three powerful techniques almost guaranteed to insure that your dogs will get along well and not only stop fighting, but think that seeing the other dog is a great thing.

The issue of stopping dogs from fighting--or keeping dogs from fighting in the first place--is so important that I have addressed this comprehensively in my ebook on eliminating dog behavior problems.

Stopping your dogs from fighting does not have to involve harsh methods like jerking him or gimmicks like squirting him or clicking.  I always say, "In dog training, 'jerk' is a noun and not a verb".

How to Introduce a New Dog to Prevent Two Dogs from Fighting

Preventing Two Dogs from Fighting is Easier Than Stopping Fighting Dogs

How to Stop My Dogs From Fighting -- How You Introduce your Two Dogs is Important!

If you're getting a second dog, don't have him meet the first one on or near either dog's territory. Introduce them on totally neutral ground and on loose leads. Use a vacant lot, parking lot or at least get a few blocks away from your house and away from where you normally walk your dog. Don't even have your car nearby.

The more neutral the area, the less likely they are to fight. Wait until they check each other out and actively interact playfully, not just passively tolerate each other. Encourage running and playing, but don't think they're buddies just because they aren't fighting.

A stranger merely tolerated on neutral territory is an unwelcome intruder on home territory. Get them actively playing and then bring them both home together. Then the new one is a pal and new pack member, not an intruder.

If they refuse to play together, even if you've run and encouraged them, consider a different dog. There is a way to get two antagonists together, even if they initially attack each other, but it's long, difficult, demanding and requires one to three hours of constant vigilance and precise, correct input by experienced professionals.

Two Dogs or One Dog -- Which is Easier?

Many people are surprised to learn that living with two dogs is easier than living with one. One dog depends upon you for everything he wants and needs including all of his social and exercise needs.

A second dog can make your life easier because the two dogs play, exercise, relieve stress and boredom, learn, explore, and socialize with each other.

Feeding two is as easy as feeding one and two indoor dogs challenging an intruder gives you and your family great security. Few people are willing to take on two dogs defending their territory--regardless of their sizes because fighting with two dogs increases the chances of getting bitten.

My passion for over 3 decades of my professional life has been to eliminate dog behavior problems -- so that fewer dogs are turned into shelters and so the dogs are more "liveable" with their families.

Behavioral therapy techniques work to eliminate dog behavior problems and they are often fast, easy, and fun!  That's because you are communicating with your dog in a way he can understand.

Harsh methods like jerking and gimmicks like squirting and clicking are not necessary.  Here is one of the "Fetkoisms" I am known for:  "In dog training, 'jerk' is a noun and not a verb!"  Learn more about my methods here:
