Koi Fish Care Answers!

Ok let's get to it. The first question:

How many koi fish do you want?

Good question. How many koi fish DO you want? This all depends on two things:

1. The growth of Koi fish.

2. The size of your koi pond.

The Growth Of Koi Fish.

Koi fish have been known to grow as much as 8 inches in the first year, and up to 16 inches in their second year. They have been known to grow as long 36 inches and weigh as much as 50 pounds! But if you are planning on having more than one Koi fish in your pond, you should expect each one of your Koi fish to grow to at least 21 inches. Why 21 inches? Because that is the average size of Koi fish in a 1000 gallon pond. Just remember, the more fish you put into your pond, the smaller the rest of your fish will grow. They all need to room to grow. Which brings us to our next question ?

The Size Of Your Pond.

There are many sizes to choose from, with the typical size being 6x8 at 1000 gallons. They range in size from 6x8 all the way up to 9x16 with over 3000 gallons of water! The size is totally up to you and how much you want to spend.

My koi pond has very high nitrates. I have been told to change the water completely over a few days, but how can I keep the nitrate level safe? Is it because I am overfeeding the fish? Appreciate any help!

Yes, I recommend changing your water completely. High nitrate levels can kill your fish! change your water and then check your levels again in a day or so. Also it wouldn't hurt to add some plant life to your pond...
