Learning how to train your golden retriever isn't a difficult task. When you begin to train your golden retriever, you should keep in mind that there is more than one way to teach a dog tricks. Puppies, for instance, should learn the basics first then they can graduate to a more advanced training routine. Teaching should be fun for you and for your golden retriever. Training your retriever should never seem like a chore for either of you. Good behavior should always be rewarded, no matter how small, but poor behavior should never be punished. Sometimes just a firm "NO" is enough.

It is most effective to train your golden retriever using positive, reward based training methods with plenty of encouragement and praise. Your golden retriever is eager to please you when training and won't benefit from any harsh punishment.

Teaching your retriever tricks

Here are some basic tips on training your golden retriever to sit and come to you.

Sit: One of the most popular commands for dogs. Stat by taking a small piece of a treat to get your retriever's interest; then move your hand with the treat in it around to the back of their head, this should cause them to sit. As soon as their rump hits the ground, give them the treat and praise them. Once they consistently sit when you move the treat to the back of their head, say "sit" when their rump is on the ground and before you give them the treat and praise them. When your retriever has mastered sitting when you command "sit", wait longer and longer in between giving treats and praise, and begin to use a release word such as "that will do" before giving the treat and praise. You can then gradually stop giving treats but continue to give praise each time your dog sits and stays sitting until he hears the release word. After he masters that skill, take him to a public place to test them.

Come: Use a long leash to keep a tether on your golden retriever; when they are close by, call their name and when they come to you, give them a treat and praise. Once your retriever consistently comes to their name, add the word "come" before their name, continue to give treats and praise until they have mastered that skill. Soon you can stop giving treats but continue giving praise. To test your retriever, take them to a public place (you may want to use the leash again at first) until your golden retriever's obedience training shows complete mastery.
