Renault's Fernando Alonso has admitted he would prefer Ferrari's Felipe Massa or BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica win the 2008 title, rather than his former McLaren team mate Lewis Hamilton.

Speaking in Thursday's press conference at the Chinese Grand Prix, Alonso was asked to clarify comments attributed to him by Spanish media in which he suggested he would do all he could to help Massa's title bid.

"First of all we need to have a competitive, hard car here in Shanghai and Brazil to be fighting with McLaren and Ferrari," said Alonso, winner of the last two rounds in Singapore and Japan.

"If we do that and Felipe wins the race and I can be second or third I will be happy to help Felipe to take as many points as possible and this is the only approach."

However, Alonso also moved to play down his potential role in deciding the championship, confessing that the man he would most like to see win would be outsider Kubica.

"I don't think that I will be a key part of the championship. Whatever driver wins will win because he won the last two races or did a better job than the other one, so that's all," he added. "You can take whatever you can from my comment but it is very simple.

"My best relationship for example is with Robert. I would like to see him winning the championship but I know this is quite difficult because I think the performance etc it will be difficult to recover 12 points. I will do my own race but after all, when you finish the race and see the results, you prefer some drivers to win or some teams to win compared to others."

Asked to comment on Alonso's apparent allegiance towards his title rivals, championship leader Hamilton said: "Honestly, I don't have an opinion on it. I focus on my job and that's the most important thing. I think we can be competitive this weekend and challenge for points and try to win. What the others do is none of my business."

10 - 12 October

Formula One racing will show its support for the FIA's Make Cars Green campaign by running on unique green-grooved tyres at this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix. The sport's official tyre supplier, Bridgestone, launched the specially-designed rubber at a ceremony in Tokyo on Wednesday.

"We hope that the launch of the Make Cars Green tyre will draw public attention to the many environmental initiatives in and around Formula One," explained Bridgestone CEO Shoshi Arakawa. "Environmental preservation is at the centre of our work at the Bridgestone Group and we hope that this collaboration with the FIA will help to spread this ethos worldwide."

Next season energy regenerating hybrid devices will be introduced to Formula One racing. This adoption of KERS technology is just one of a number of initiatives launched by the sport to improve its environmental credentials and, hopefully, help accelerate the use of fuel-efficient technology on public roads.

"New rule changes, alongside the support for awareness-raising initiatives such as the Make Cars Green campaign, will change the face of motor sport and place it at the very heart of environmental developments in the automotive sector," explained Max Mosley, President of the FIA, Formula One racing's governing body. "The FIA is determined to ensure that future investment in motor sport will also help drive the development of technologies that will benefit the public at large."

McLaren team mates Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen were in attendance at the Tokyo launch, alongside Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa.

"I'm really pleased to help support this campaign, the new tyre for Fuji is a great way of using the sport to send a positive message to a massive global audience," said Raikkonen. "But it's not only about marketing, F1 attracts some of the best engineers in the world. I think some of the most important work they've done has been in terms of safety, it's improved hugely in recent years.

"If the safety and the new green technology lessons learned in motorsport are applied to motoring then the sport will have played a really important part in saving lives as well as perhaps helping to save the planet."

Hamilton added: "Since it first launched I've been happy to help promote the very positive messages of the Make Cars Green campaign. It is a subject that goes far beyond racing. The car is an incredibly positive thing and I think the messages of the campaign help to show us that we can all choose to drive in a greener way.

"The new Make Cars Green tyre that all the teams will be running on in Fuji is a great way to promote the campaign and a real first for Formula One. The sport can also help in other ways, especially with the launch of new energy efficient technologies next season."

The Make Cars Green campaign aims to reduce the impact of motoring on the environment in a number of ways, such as through the promotion of fuel efficient driver behaviour; the introduction of new technologies to help motorists monitor their environmental impact; the improvement of tyre design to help save energy; and by encouraging the global use of unleaded and sulphur free fuels.

The softer of the two Bridgestone tyres used at Fuji this weekend will retain its central white groove as normal.

28 September 2008

Organisers of the inaugural 2008 FORMULA 1%u2122 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix today demonstrated the lighting system that will make history in September, when Singapore hosts the world's first night race on the FORMULA 1%u2122 calendar.

Witnessed by Minister of State for Trade and Industry S Iswaran, key officials from race promoter Singapore GP and the Singapore Tourism Board, and other invited guests, lighting consultant Valerio Maioli S.p.A. switched on 16 lighting projectors on a 64-metre stretch set up on St Andrew's Road in front of the Padang. Simulating daylight conditions, the projectors are installed on aluminium trusses supported by three towers, each approximately 10 metres tall placed 32 metres apart and supported by a footing system with a steel plate.

The set-up offers a snapshot of the lighting infrastructure that will be used during the race event. This bespoke state of the art lighting system consists of pylons and footing system supplied by Singapore contractors, projectors by Philips and aluminium trusses from Italy. It will remain on St Andrews Road for a week till 6 April 2008, and members of the public can view the lighting infrastructure from 7pm till midnight daily.

The entire track will be fitted with nearly 1,500 lighting projectors and will be powered by 12 twin-power generators. An overall average of about 3000lux levels is required to illuminate the circuit, which is enough to meet High Definition Television broadcast standards. As a result, the track will be almost four times brighter than a typical stadium. Installation of the lighting system will be carried out in stages, starting with the Pit Straight in end-May with completion targeted for 31 August 2008.

The live demonstration of the lighting system is the latest milestone as Singapore prepares for race day in September. The pit building is 65 percent complete and well on track to be ready by end-June. In the advanced stages of completion are the modification works to existing roads, such as the removal of kerbs and traffic islands along the track, as well as the expansion of the Promenade at the National Day Parade seating gallery. The rest of the road works, such as the construction of a new track section in front of the pit building and the construction of a service road and tunnel to the pit building, are expected to be completed by end-May.

Mr Lim Neo Chian, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive at the Singapore Tourism Board, who chairs the FORMULA 1%u2122 Working Committee, noted the project's steady progress. "Preparations for the race are in full swing and we are on schedule to stage the inaugural 2008 FORMULA 1%u2122 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. While we've still some way to go, works are progressing smoothly. The anticipation is building in Singapore, with an exciting line-up of lifestyle events being organised to enhance the visitor experience during the race period. We look forward to welcoming visitors to Singapore to enjoy our unique race and other festivities."

The Singapore GP Season (20 September to 5 October 2008) features a number of quality lifestyle events surrounding the FORMULA 1%u2122 race. Besides the Singapore River Festival (19 to 28 Sept), the FORMULA 1%u2122 - The Great Design Race (25 Aug to 2 Oct) at the National Museum of Singapore, the Singapore Biennale (11 Sept to 16 Nov) and the Singapore Motorshow 2008 (26 Sept to 5 Oct) at Suntec Singapore which were previously announced, other highlights include:

F1 2008 Team Preview - Williams

Williams
7 Nico Rosberg 8 Kazuki Nakajima
Testers: Nico Hulkenberg
Williams did a huge amount in 2007 to dismiss any suggestions that they are slowly declining into the sort of supporting role which eventually claimed Tyrrell. And their performance so far in pre-season testing makes them a clear contender for the position of dark horse prior to the 2008 kick-off.

The FW29 did much to put the team back on the right technical track in 2007, and its similarly Toyota-powered FW30 successor has looked very strong all winter. Senior engineers Patrick Head and Sam Michael both firmly believe that, while they aren't yet ready to claim victories, the gap between themselves and Ferrari and McLaren will be a lot smaller. In the quiet ebullience of one of the most popular teams in the sport, one sees the shoots of recovery to the level of competitiveness that made them great.

On the driver front, two sons of famous fathers will battle it out. Nico Rosberg made a great name for himself in 2007, but was that just because the FW29 was a great car? This year he has to beat decisively new team mate Kazuki Nakajima, son of the former Lotus and Tyrrell racer Satoru, if he is to maintain his career momentum.

F1 Australian Grand Prix 2008 Review

One season starts this weekend in Melbourne and it looks set to herald one of the closest run championship races for years.

It is also the 12th occasion the race in Australia has opened the new season, with the 2006 race moving to an April date due to the Commonwealth Games.

Lewis Hamilton began his F1 career in Melbourne last season by taking third place with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. It was the start of nine consecutive podium finishes and missing out on the title by a single point.

He said: "Now I know what to expect, I know about my preparations so I am storing energy. To some people it might appear that I am quieter or something along those lines, but I am saving all this energy for the first race, and I cannot wait to get out there.

"We need to go there with total confidence in the car, which I have and to get off to a really good start, it needs to be the best start possible.

"So I am going there with the aim of winning the race, and we will all work hard to try and achieve that."

Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding, a company wholly-owned by Bahrain, holds a 30 per cent stake in McLaren.

Will it be Kimi Raikkonen or Lewis Hamilton? Fernando Alonso or Felipe Massa?

To add spice to the debate, I will throw in a few more names - debutants Sebastien Bourdais and Nelson Piquet - and stir it with veterans like David Coulthard and Mark Webber. A hazy picture indeed, but nevertheless fascinating.

With the opening race of the new season set for Sunday in Melbourne, the starting grid presents endless possibilities. But the most striking feature for me this season is the fact that the best three drivers of last season - Raikkonen, Hamilton and Alonso respectively, are with different teams - Ferrari, McLaren and Renault.

A thrilling three-way race with Massa providing another attractive fourth angle can be a perfect sequel to the 2007 season which went all the way to the wire. Add to it the fact that the leading cars still look faster despite the banning of traction control and other electronic driver aids to raise the level of expectations another notch or two.

At another level, Formula One will also be taking a step into the dark with Singapore ready to host the first night race. All in all another exciting year is on the cards.
