How to Write a Song
The importance of taking notes
Anyone who has spent any time learning how to write a song, has had an idea come to mind and thought "I will remember later when I can write it down." /cue homer voice...D'OH!! Hopefully you learned you lesson the first time.
Having a notebook handy to write down a lyrical idea or a musical phrase is an essential part of the writing process. It seems like inspiration likes to come at the strangest times. IE. When you are on the toilet or in the shower. If I could invent waterproof notepaper I would be a millionaire, but I digress. Keeping an idea notebook close by will allow you to catch those thoughts. What might seem like random ideas at the time often times will turn out to be the start of inspiration.
If you want to write interesting songs then you have to do interesting things. Get out and live life!! With this in mind take a small notebook with you when you are out taking that walk in the woods, or going for a picnic. I know it seems strange but if you don't restrict the times that inspiration can come, then it will come more often and unexpected.
Having blank sheet music, guitar tab, or chord charts available in your notebook is also very helpful. I can't count the number of times I was playing and had a great guitar part only to forget it the next time I got around to playing...D'oh!!! There is a ton of free blank sheet music and chord sheet available online, so do yourself a favor and print them out and keep some in that notebook. You will thank me later.
