HP Laptop Broken?

If you own one of the "pavilion" series of HP Laptops including models: DV2000, DV6000, DV9000, TX1000-1400 and others or certain Dell and Apple models, you may have, or will have a problem with the NVidia Chip. Essentially you lose video on your computer. A black or blank screen.

I have had this happen to me! These are the steps I went through which eventually led to a repair at a reasonable cost.

What are the Symptoms of this Common Problem

Having had this issue personally, I can describe the stages of 'sickness' my laptop went through. Your symptoms may vary to some degree.

*About the time the (1 year) warranty ran out, my dv9000 computer started occasionally going 'blue screen'. The computer would seem hotter than usual. very hot. When the computer had a chance to cool down, it would restart and run fine.

*After doing this occasionally for a few months, the computer seemed to recover completely for about 9 or 10 months. However, I then noticed my cd/optical drive stopped working. I replaced the drive with no improvement. The computer seemed to stop 'recognizing' the drive completely.

*About a month later, my computer screen, suddenly went white, with a few 'static lines'. Turned it off, but afterwards the computer screen went permanently black. All buttons light up, but no video.

What Causes the Problem?

There is a design flaw with the manner the chip is attached to the motherboard causing overheating issues due to a weak die/packaging material. The chip overheats, detaches, and loses its connection with the motherboard.

This flaw/defect is also present in many Dell and even Mac Laptops. You can find more background information Here.

This is a very common problem, demonstrated by the tens of thousands of people who have viewed some of the videos linked below.

Apple, HP and Dell customers Sued NVidia.

How Can I Get This Fixed?

After my notebook went kaput, I started looking for fixes on the net. There are plenty of videos on how to fix this problem, some are listed below. But if you are not an experienced computer repairman, they look quite time-consuming, and tricky.

I thought about replacing the motherboard myself, this looked a lot more costly than I expected. They seemed to cost almost as much as a comparable replacement. laptop.

I found a link to a repair service on eBay. They seemed to be well acquainted with the problem, and their feedback was excellent. The cost was just over $100 plus I had to pay one way on the shipping (under $20). If they couldn't fix it, I would get a refund & only had to pay the return shipping. Could I get my computer repaired this cheap in town? Doubtful.

Anyway, I went for that option. Their fix worked perfectly, it even fixed my cd drive problem.

The sellers name is 'brickfence' if anybody is interested. They don't offer the service continually as they seem to get as much business as they can handle.

Good explanation of the fix. I have not transferred into the age of laptops yet because I like building and if needed, fixing my towers. Easy to access. This lens though may change my mind to try a laptop for some uses though.

Just looked at some of these diy video fixes on youtube, I wouln't put a motherboard in my oven at home, cause flame retardants which are volatile fumes are carcinogenic as far as I know. Motherboards are impregnated with these to stop laptops burting into flames or catching fire due to electrical faults ):

Best place I have used to get my hp dv2000 fixed after a graphics chip failure was at www.first4laptops.com
didn't cost much, was well worth it since I had all my work on it, buying a new one would have meant two weeks of putting the software right.
